What can make a genuine and positive difference to the hiring of new talent into Insurance? There are some brilliant initiatives within the Insurance market to attract individuals to want to work in Insurance. In particular I am a big fan of the efforts being made by the London Market Group, Lloyd's Market Association, and London Insurance Life in showcasing the exciting opportunities a career in Insurance—and specifically in Claims—can offer. However, for these efforts to truly succeed, we need insurance firms to broaden their approach to hiring and to consider employing individuals who are not currently working in insurance roles. In 2024, we've seen many insurance firms scale back on early-career programs and trainee roles—a response to an uncertain economic outlook. While understandable, this shift risks limiting the effectiveness of initiatives aimed at drawing fresh talent into our field. Job titles intrigue me. On one level, obviously they are important. Many organizations use them when determining compensation, and they help organize layers of organizational responsibility. On the other hand, there are other organizations that have very few, if any, job titles. I have even seen some companies where it seems like everybody has a different title. Beyond that, a job title at one company is different than perhaps an equivalent job title at other companies. In insurance, it seems like so many people are some variety of vice president. However, being a vice president at different companies probably means something different, and I would imagine the responsibilities are different. Therefore, it is hard to determine really what it means when you say you have a certain title. It is more important to ask about competencies and responsibilities. In my other world of academia, there are lots of honorary titles, and some of them bring very few, if any benefits. They often times sound impressive, but it is unclear what they actually mean. On a personal level, job titles matter to individuals because they help achieve higher positions later on. It is easier to become the aforementioned vice president if you had a title as a manager before I have to imagine. Certain titles imply either levels of expertise or management experience. Job titles also matter because they do indicate seniority in many cases, or at least experience and hopefully achievement in a particular field. I don't know to what degree anyone looks at my job title as a senior underwriter and chooses to submit to me as opposed to someone that is an underwriter. Maybe some people do, I don't know. I have never asked. I guess I don't have a lot of a conclusion, but do you have any thoughts about job titles and what they mean? Do you have any experiences where having a particular title was a gateway to some other opportunity?

*** Just a note on CVs, predominantly aimed at those with less that a couple of years insurance experience *** Clients always want to see GCSE subjects, with grades. Same with A levels, and the same if you have a degree. You may feel in your opinion, your grades may not be as good as you would like, or you just think the detail doesn't matter. It does. For those of you who put ' X amount of GCSEs at A-C - If the highest GCSE you have is a C or B, please don't put A-C! As a recruiter, in house or agency, our job is to make sure we have this detail, so we will ask anyway. Dates are still important. It's less about age, and more about being able to track the journey. I know that both agencies and companies who recruit directly, can receive ALOT of CVs for any one role. If you make the job more time consuming to review a CV - for example 'hhmmmm what are the grades, I'll have to call them'... oh wait, I have 12 suitable CVs already which meet the specified criteria - so they go to the maybe, or reject pile... and that's that! And finally - I know how hard it is for you guys trying to get the job of choice, I feel gutted for so many excellent candidates who if I had the jobs, I absolutely could help, but currently we just aren't seeing as many at this level. So if you're applying to job after job, please make sure you CHANGE YOUR PROFILE.... nothing more disappointing seeing a candidate applying for an Underwriting Assistant job, but the profile says looking to make a break into the broking market. Same if you're law student who has really struggled to get a contract, or legal experience so decide to look at insurance as another avenue. When you're CV says 'an aspiring law graduate, looking for a career within the legal field'... I know it's tough with all the applications, and a little soul destroying, but being savvy with your CV really will help, it may be time consuming but it reflects so much better on you if you get it right the first time!
