The threat of piracy and armed robbery (PAR) in Southeast Asia is not as severe as commonly portrayed in news reporting. The collection of data on PAR incidents has improved, resulting in increased reporting. Meanwhile, maritime law enforcement has steadily improved and increased cooperation among Southeast Asian states and private sector actors has taken place. Private maritime security companies (PMSCs) were hired in the past, but the roles of shippers and insurers have taken a more active role in maritime security governance processes. Insurers and shippers have become key stakeholders alongside increasingly capable states and as a result, par policies increasingly rely on cooperation between industry and state actors. The International Maritime Bureau's (IMB) Q3 2024 report stated that global maritime crime and piracy incidents are at their lowest since 1994. From January to September 2024, 79 incidents were reported, marking a significant reduction from 99 in the same period last year. However, while this trend is promising, it’s important not to become complacent, as the safety of crews remains a priority. Key findings from the report highlight that between January and September 2024, 62 vessels were boarded, six were hijacked, nine faced attempted attacks, and two were fired upon. In 86% of these incidents, perpetrators successfully accessed the vessels typically during nighttime. This is a continuing maritime security or marsec update from Sanborn Analytics. On October 18th, 2024, the Mexican Navy conducted its largest drug bust to date in a coordinated multi-vessel operation off the coasts of Michoacan and Guerrero. The operation began when a Navy patrol boat and helicopter spotted a go-fast boat with eight people aboard. Upon realizing they were being pursued, the suspects dumped marked packages overboard but were swiftly apprehended. The Navy recovered 94 packages and 38 drums of fuel, totaling 2.1 tonnes of drugs. Shortly after, a second boat with three crew members was intercepted, leading to the recovery of 1,100 kilos of drugs and 125 fuel drums, hinting at a long voyage plan. A third vessel seized off Guerrero was found with 40 packages totaling 1,200 kilos of drugs. In a daring operation, Navy commandos boarded a 15-meter semi-submersible at full speed, seizing 2.2 tonnes of drugs. The final two vessels were smaller, with six crew members and 1,800 kilos of drugs captured between them. In total, the Navy seized six boats, arrested 23 suspects, and recovered 8.3 tonnes of drugs and 2,300 gallons of fuel. The coastal states of Michoacan and Guerrero serve as key drug transshipment hubs, controlled by rival groups including the CJNG and smaller local gangs, according to Insight Crime. Given the pager attack was illegal - and lethal! Will the world leaders who can and should act do so? In carrying out this illegal act the perpetrators have found a way to insert themselves into the pager's supply chain and lethally compromise it. Compromising the global supply chain as a means of conducting terrorist acts should set off an urgent hunt by governments and corporate leaders for the perpetrators. And, when found, huge consequences for the perpetrators and their backers. To do less jeopardizes us all. It is not hard to envision what the consequences of a failure to do so would mean for global trade and security.
Pager attack on Hezbollah was a sophisticated ‘booby-trap’ operation − it was also illegal

Security operators in the United Kingdom may face threats such as terrorism, violent crime, armed individuals, protests and riots, physical assault, intruders and trespassers, physical altercations, stabbings and slashings, crowd crushes and stampedes, hostile vehicle incidents, chemical or biological threats (Potentially), natural disasters, and insider threats. Labour Provision can be considered for illegality due to the serious risks it poses, which may compromise public safety. These risks include the potential for worker exploitation and the undermining of industry reputation through inadequate management, thereby prejudicing the integrity of the supply chain. Security roles should not be viewed merely as basic job positions, as they encompass a range of critical functions including customer service, first response, asset protection, and much more.

Pirate Attacks: Viable Cause for Concern in the Shipping Industry Sixty incidents of hijacking and armed robbery against ships were recorded in the first half of 2024. Of these incidents, perpetrators successfully boarded 85% of the targeted ships. Michael Howlett, International Maritime Bureau director, said, “Violence against crews continues, with 85 hostages taken compared to 36 at the same time last year, 11 kidnappings and two threats. Guns and knives were reported in 34 of the 59 incidents, an alarming increase on the same period last year.” John W.H. Denton AO, ICC Secretary General, said: “The alarming increase in incidents of a violent nature underlines the need for continued vigilance by the international community to ensure the safety of all seafarers – especially at this time of heightened uncertainty for maritime transport.” For information about insuring your cargo shipments, please contact us at info@worldinsuranceagency.com. #pirateattacks #globalshipping #maritimetransport
