What is HŮT International? When we came to America at age 19 in order to go to college, everything was a challenge. From setting up a bank account in a foreign country to paying for car registration, the paperwork and bureaucracy seemed to never end. However, nothing was more challenging than finding a place to live in one of America’s most expensive cities, as a university student and foreigner. Unlike our peers, whose parents were able to co-sign leases and pass credit checks, we found ourselves alone, with, evidently, no record of housing or credit. We had support from our families, but couldn’t prove it in American terms. We had several of our friends in similar positions get scammed on Facebook pages. We got denied from multiple places and had to resort to staying with friends during the first weeks. There were times when we allowed ourselves to be dramatic and think we’d be homeless forever. These experiences taught us a lesson: both landlords and tenants need security in order for the transaction to move forward. This security, however, can be difficult to achieve in cases like ours. After some time, we were finally able to join someone else’s lease— a process that involved hours scouring Facebook groups, and a great deal of unwarranted trust from peers that took a chance on us. However, there’s no reason this process should continue to be as hard. Though we’re now established renters with solid credit (only took 3 years! 🎉), we still remember our initial, desperate search for housing as one of the most stressful periods of our adult lives. It inspired us to create a solution: an organization dedicated to help students in the same situation struggle less than we did. HŮT International Living is meant to connect incoming international students with landlords in San Diego, and acts as a guarantor and middle entity in order to give security to both sides. We let students tour their new home live, eliminating fear of scams. We’re excited to start working on our first term ever for Spring 2025 and to continue building this company while giving back to the community. Follow our journey!

We at UK Youth are pleased that Labour has recognised the importance of youth work and has made commitments to expand access to this life changing support. Their promise to extend the right to vote to all 16 and 17 year olds is a welcome sign of trust and respect for young people. Labour have pledged almost three hundred million pounds a year to deliver Young Futures Hubs, increase youth workers in A&Es and Pupil Referral Units, and provide early support for mental health in schools. Youth workers will also play a vital role in implementing Labour's guarantee of meaningful work experience, access to training, apprenticeships, and other employment support. With over a billion pounds a year cut from youth services in recent years, this is welcome recognition and promise of investment. However, there is a long road to travel. UK Youth looks forward to working with whoever forms the next government to unlock the power of youth work for all. https://lnkd.in/esCidThc

Back to work today, again huge thanks for the well wishes at the weekend. We got so lucky with the weather, maybe burying the sausage the night before really helped - no that's not a euphemism, feel free to ask if you see me. I'm always talking on Housed - The Shared Living Podcast about how the government needs a national student housing strategy and there needs to be more coordination between universities, local authorities, the government and the private sector to deliver sustainable, affordable student accommodation. In short: The right product in the right place at the right price. This event is an opportunity to push that agenda forward and have discussions with people in power that aren't just behind the scenes conversations about the workings of the PBSA sector for policy-makers. The Labour Party are in government now and we're already seeing movement with the Renter's Rights Bill (AKA Renter's Reform Bill). This is a start but the movement isn't all positive for students, landlords or PBSA as there is still some ambiguity around what will apply to PBSA, what the impact will be on the HMO market and whether students will actually benefit long term. On Monday 18th November I'll be speaking at the 'Next Steps for Student Housing' event run by Westminster Forum Projects. The event brings together people like Rebecca O'Hare of University of Leeds, Scott Lewis of Homes for Students, Ben Beadle of National Residential Landlords Association - NRLA (who you'll see on the TV a lot), Calum MacInnes of Student Tribe, Martin Blakey former CEO of Unipol Student Homes, Tom Walker of StuRents, Rowan Fisher and Mark Swales of Universities UK and Sean Cudmore. It'll be well worth logging in online to see this one and it's from 9-1 so won't take up your whole day. The agenda is already online and more speakers will be added including senior parliamentarians and government decision-makers. #pbsa #studenthousing #studentaccommodation #wfpevents #parliament #housed #RRB

Private equity groups battle it out for $15bn schools group ==> what's the bet that Australia's failing university sector, HECS debts and international students (backdoor Australian permanent residency for sale) is being driven by private equity policy making and elite capture of both sides of Australian politics? Not content with just screwing up water utilities to drive poverty creation for everyday Australians and British people, they have designs on our education system too.

Financial Times: A-level results day traditionally signals the end of a nerve-wracking period for students. However, in recent times, both students and their parents have quickly encountered a new challenge: securing affordable student housing. The shortage of student accommodation, especially in sought-after university cities like Bristol, has become increasingly severe. This situation has resulted in some students being placed in towns far from their universities, creating a difficult start to their higher education journey. Despite the challenges, investors recognize a lucrative opportunity in the market. For instance, Unite Group, a London-based company, recently secured £450 million to expand its student accommodation portfolio. #QIP #UK #pbsa #realestate #privateequity #livingsector #alternativeinvestments

🌍 From Bradford to London: A Tale of Two Cities and Personal Growth 🌍 Moving from Bradford to London has been an eye-opening experience, not just in terms of geography but in opportunities and challenges. In Bradford, where higher education isn't as common in my community, I learned early on the value of resilience and the importance of carving out your own path. It’s a place that shapes you with its warmth and grounded sense of community, but also where resources and networks can sometimes feel limited. London, by contrast, is a city full of opportunities – a fast-paced environment that offers exposure to new ideas, diverse people, and more structured support systems. Navigating university life here has been a journey of learning, both about economics and about myself. The shift from Bradford's familiarity to London’s vast network has pushed me to become adaptable and resourceful. Yet, what’s clear to me is that success isn't defined by where you start. Whether it's in Bradford or London, it’s about the mindset you bring to the table. The grit I developed growing up in Bradford has helped me seize opportunities here in London. Without a clear roadmap or a family background in higher education, I’ve had to navigate a lot on my own. But that process has shaped me—teaching me to embrace independence and seize opportunities. Bradford taught me how to persevere, and London has given me the platform to apply that resilience in new ways. The more you change, the more you grow. #GrowthMindset #BradfordToLondon #Resilience #HigherEducation #Adaptability #JourneyOfGrowth

Following up on the recent video discussing the decline in rents in North Bristol, I'm now looking ahead to the potential impact of Bristol Uni's Temple Quarter development in 2026. Could landlords in Cotham and Clifton learn valuable lessons from Filton to safeguard their investments for the future? As universities continue to expand their accommodations, how will this trend affect landlords renting to Bristol students? What are their options? Read more on student lettings in Filton, and the wider Bristol market here: https://lnkd.in/gu6M2dgR
