In celebration of Climate Week, Kering unveils ‘Jurassic Illuminated’, an extraordinary immersive exhibition at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. As part of our ongoing commitment to biodiversity Kering supports organizations leading the way in biodiversity conservation and science. A patron of this institution, Kering supports the National Museum of Natural History’s scientific research efforts, including a program to preserve its ethnological collections. For the sixth edition of this night-time exhibition, take a journey back 200 million years to the heart of the Jurassic era, a time of lush valleys, vast oceans, and fascinating species. This extraordinary immersive exhibition features hundreds of monumental illuminated structures brought to life by a team of 30 visionary scientists and illustrators. Through this spectacular display, visitors are invited to explore the rich biodiversity of the Jurassic period. It’s a breathtaking reminder of our planet’s history and a call to action for its future. Don’t miss ‘Jurassic Illuminated,’ running until January 19th. Read this informative article from The Guardian to learn more about the Urdaibai Red Alert 🚨 and its implications for people and nature. Plans for a new Guggenheim Museum in Guernica’s #UNESCO-designated Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve have sparked concerns among locals and environmentalists. If the project goes forward, this protected area, a vital ecosystem for biodiversity and migratory birds, could be significantly impacted by an estimated 140,000 visitors annually. Environmental groups are concerned that the museum will disturb Urdaibai’s fragile ecosystems, while supporters argue it could bring economic benefits to the region. The situation highlights the complex challenge of balancing cultural development with environmental preservation, particularly in an area with such ecological significance. As we reach 10 years of Western Australian shipwreck models, underwater photogrammetry is now a proven research and management tool. The Western Australian Museum is leading the way, researching and monitoring sites all along the state's coastline. Here's some of our recent work on shipwrecks off Wadjemup Rottnest Island, producing the most detailed model yet the City of York 1869 wreck. - with Aurora Philpin, David O'Sullivan and Ross Anderson

Archaeologists from the WA Museum's Maritime Heritage department have created the most detailed model ever published of the City of York shipwreck. The City of York was a 68-metre-long, three-masted iron-hulled ship built in 1869. During its final voyage from San Francisco, it was carrying a cargo of timber and doors when it struck a reef off the coast of Wadjemup / Rottnest Island during a storm on 12 July 1899. The WA Museum works with the Rottnest Island Authority and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions to monitor and document underwater heritage sites in the Perth region. This includes creating 3D models to track long-term changes in shipwrecks like the City of York. 📷 Meet Sebastião Salgado, an internationally acclaimed photographer celebrated for his powerful advocacy for Indigenous peoples and his stunning documentation of the natural world. In 1994, he embarked on a journey that profoundly impacted his life and work. While documenting the atrocities of the Rwandan genocide, Salgado experienced a deep disillusionment with humanity, leading him to lose hope in the survival of his species and to stop taking photos. Seeking solace, he and his wife Lélia Dluiz Wanick returned to Brazil. Upon arriving at Sebastião’s native lands in Aimorés (Minas Gerais), they found the region, once covered by the Atlantic Forest, transformed into infertile, eroded land. The trees, the smell of flowers and the songs of birds had all disappeared. Lélia proposed the idea of restoring the forest. Embracing this vision, they began a monumental 20-year reforestation project, Instituto Terra. To date, they have planted 3 million trees, re-creating 555 acres of forest. 🌳 Their efforts have resulted in the forest being designated as part of the UNESCO Mata Atlantica Biosphere Reserve. 🏛 The regenerated forest now hosts: 🐆 33 species of mammals (7 classified as very vulnerable) 🦜 172 species of birds (inc. 6 endangered species) 🦎 16 species of amphibians & 15 species of reptiles In this process, Salgado discovered that success doesn't require a multitude of species, just the right ones. Planting pioneer species is essential, as these foundational species create the conditions for other plants to thrive, following nature’s "sequence". 🌿 The project also reignited Salgado’s passion for photography. He has since captured over 300,000 images of natural landscapes, wildlife, and remote communities, showcasing the breathtaking beauty and resilience of nature. 🏞️ Instituto Terra has not only regenerated the environment but also restored Salgado's faith in humanity, demonstrating the profound connection between humans and nature. 🌎 (🎬 Credit: UNESCO) #Nature #Brazil #Biodiversity
