Extending the European Emissions Trading System (ETS) to the buildings and transport sector – referred to as “ETS-2” - plays an important role in decarbonizing those sectors but is not enough on its own. While ETS2 offers a market-driven approach, putting a price on carbon emissions, it must be amplified by complementary policies, says Matthias Duwe in the latest “Green Deal – Big Deal?” Podcast episode. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dRg7iEBE Join hosts Ewa Iwaszuk and Aaron Best, and guests Sibyl Steuwer from the BPIE - Buildings Performance Institute Europe and Matthias Duwe of the Ecologic Institute as we navigate the complexities of the building and transport sectors and the challenges of extending the Emission Trading System to these sectors. In the deep dive into building sector challenges, we explore policy changes affecting housing affordability, complexities connected to diverse building types and ownership structures, and disparities in cost distribution between owners and renters. #Sustainability, #EmissionTrading, #EUEnvironment, #ClimateAction, #EUGreenDeal

A Nuance Troll - have you ever met someone like this? It's something discussed in a recent version of the brilliant Citations Needed Podcast that covers how PR, deceit and media is used https://lnkd.in/e82uezGh It's an excellent term that I'm sure anyone pushing for any kind of change has encountered - Oh you want to act in a climate emergency? Well no we can't do that, it's too nuanced, too difficult, too complex. Cross party support is impossible and even if we did all want it (spoiler, the UK does https://lnkd.in/eDTBJ-6s), it would be too expensive and time consuming. You need to provide me a faultless strategy on what you're going to do about it first, otherwise it should all be dismissed out of hand. That's not to say there is no nuance or difficult problems to solve, I'm constantly impressed by the talent and ingenuity of those in the built environment tackling challenges of insulation, retrofit and decarbonising buildings. Or those winning over clients or even their own bosses for more sustainable architecture and construction. It's something that affects so many progressive causes from poverty, inequality and race - it especially reminded me of writer Toni Morrison and her quote “The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being." I've read so many articles and listened to so many bad faith arguments that can be easily dismissed as just nuance trolling. It's designed to silence people and make sure the status quo remains intact, and those profiting from it unaffected. So look out for those disingenuous actors, and support those looking to make change happen. It's 50° in many parts of the world this week.

In the COP29, the capital allocation/ financial support that that polluters (Global North) of the past 2 centuries, have made to limit damage to the planet has been extremely low and does not help the developing countries to grow with smaller ecological damage. What I find quite odd in the podcast, is the energy companies responsibility (it states the profit for the past half century has been about 1 trillion dollars a year) and they should also pay. The growth and profit of the fossil fuel companies resulted in value appreciation and dividends which was taken by the shareholders, so instead of companies as they stand now, should the investors return the gains from these companies. (Actually, I am getting confused on this topic, in a capitalist world, who is responsible for wilful or inadvertent damage done by the companies in the past when all gains have been shared by shareholders) #COP29 #carbonemission https://lnkd.in/eArCZNwU
