Today, on April 28th, we take a moment to solemnly remember and honour the workers who have tragically lost their lives or suffered injuries while on the job. In 2023, BC witnessed 175 fatalities resulting from workplace injuries and diseases. Each number represents a life, a family, a community forever changed. As we reflect on these sobering statistics, we are reminded of the importance of prioritizing safety in every aspect of our work. Behind each incident is a story, a loss felt deeply by loved ones and colleagues. Today, we stand in solidarity with them, acknowledging their pain and resilience. This day serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to strengthen our commitment to safety. It is a call to action to renew efforts in creating workplaces where every individual feels secured and protected. By fostering a culture of safety, we honour the memory of those lost and strive to prevent further tragedies. Let's use this day not only to mourn but to reinvigorate our dedication to keeping each other safe, every day, in every workplace. #DayofMourning #WorkplaceSafety #SafetyFirst

I've never been a fan of the heat. Ask my friends, it turns me irritable. Borderline Incredible Hulk status. I'd love to hear what you all do to beat the heat. With summer's arrival, temps are soaring. Here are some tips to keep your workers safe: • Hold health and safety meetings with your employees on this subject. • Train staff to be aware of the dangers of extreme temperatures in their work environment, both inside and outside. • Have employees take frequent breaks in a comfortable and dry place. Fire exits are a critical part of violence response in healthcare. Sometimes the best option for staff is to escape the violence (aka- GTFO): -Staff need to exit quickly (Run) in the event of an active shooter. -Staff may need to escape an out-of-control patient at a community care site. But what if they can't leave because the exit door won't open? Exit doors used infrequently used can rust, sag, or get jammed with debris. As a consultant, I've had to throw a shoulder into some doors to open them and others required a heavy kick to open. How can you prevent this from happening? -Using uncommon fire exits during fire drills. -Regular inspections by facilities/maintenance team. -Security rounding to check that exit doors are secure AND can be opened. As a BONUS...staff using uncommon exits during fire drills will give them alternate routes to use if they need to escape violence too! PS- What would you add? ♻ Repost if you found this helpful! #healthcare #healthcaresecurity #security #healthcareleaders #violenceprevention #riskmanagement #ambulatorycare
