Recently, I was asked about the most significant updates in HubSpot, and I reckon one of the standout features is the ability to extend the data model. This used to be exclusive to the Enterprise version, but now it's available in other versions too, thanks to templates. This got me thinking about why extending the data model is so crucial. In the superadmin’s bootcamp, we teach that HubSpot is first and foremost a database where objects and things are stored and can relate to each other. These relationships are a bit like the neural networks in our brain. The database is our business brain, and as we build better relationships, our CRM functions more efficiently. The standard data model with contacts, companies, deals, and tickets works well for many businesses. But when you can extend this model to include specifics unique to your business—like courses if you're in education or differentiating projects from retainers in professional services—you gain much richer data connections. For instance, in real estate, you might want to track properties and visits. 🟢 An enriched data model provides better insights into your operations, helping you optimise and grow. The quality of reports you can generate depends on the quality of your data. If your data model lacks essential objects specific to your business, you'll never be able to report effectively on those areas. Essentially, the level of reporting you can achieve aligns directly with the robustness of your data model. If it's too basic, your reports will be limited too. To be an effective reporter in HubSpot, it is essential to first master the art of data management. When introducing a new process in HubSpot, consider the following questions: - What metrics will you use to evaluate the performance of this new process? - Where will the necessary data be stored to answer these metrics? - How will this data be imported into HubSpot? - Once in HubSpot, how will the data be organized and managed? In my decade of experience at HubSpot, assisting customers with strategy implementation, I frequently observed that many users proceed with implementation without addressing these fundamental questions. This often leads to two significant challenges: - Data Integrity: Issues such as duplicated data across objects, missing data, or redundant information can create complexity and undermine accuracy. - Usability: Ineffective tracking mechanisms can be difficult for managers to interpret and offer little value to individual contributors. By addressing these questions upfront, you will create a HubSpot database that not only supports your company’s objectives but also enhances your reporting capabilities. Have you reported in HubSpot?
