Fantastic webinar from English Learners Success Forum to elevate the features of high-quality Spanish language arts materials for use in K-5 bilingual classrooms. In this session, the panel of experts in the field of English Language Learning led conversations from the "Materials Matter: Parity and Quality for Spanish Language Arts" report to benefit educators as well as curriculum developers and vendors. The panelists suggested that our young people will show up along a continuum of bilingualism, and it's up to us to ensure that the resources we choose, structures we put in place, and practices we implement can meet them where they are, leverage their expertise, and build them up accordingly. We were reminded of the variability of Spanish and indigenous languages and about the importance of authentic text to model and communicate the traditions and discourse authentic to each language. We heard about the need for explicit cross-linguistic connections. And we were urged to ensure that assessment in our bilingual classrooms is responsive to our students and measures what we actually want to learn about their development. I appreciated the thoughtfulness with which each presenter tackled questions. Sandra I. Musanti suggested greater use of performance assessment to allow students to demonstrate what they know and can do through multiple and varied ways. Altagracia Delgado urged us not to fear AI, but instead approach the technology with balance and understanding of the purpose we want it to serve.
