Today, the Inland Waterways Maritime Academy, set to open here in Monroe County in Sardis, Ohio, was featured on NPR. The academy represents more than just a facility, it’s a lifeline for workforce development, education, and tourism in a region that’s ready to thrive. Through partnerships with organizations like Mountwest College and with state-of-the-art classrooms, curriculum, and simulators for steersmen, deckhands, and other critical roles, this academy will bridge the gap between industry needs and workforce readiness. It’s not just about training future river workers, it’s about creating a robust pipeline of skilled professionals who will keep the inland waterways moving forward and improve employment opportunities in our region. This project wouldn’t be possible without industry leaders like my friend and colleague Capt. CR Neale of Neale Marine Transportation, who have tirelessly highlighted the challenges facing the maritime sector and championed initiatives like this one to meet them head-on. Each one of us is a tugboat to a giant ship (watch the video at the end) We were standing on the deck as the ship was about to leave the port. Idea was to see the sunset, soak in the atmosphere of excitement and happiness in the midst of fellow passengers. When you’re standing on a higher deck the eyesight is usually on the horizon to appreciate the dance of rays emanating from the twilight. Someone noticed this tugboat attempting to tie a rope on our ship and it intrigued me. Later on someone explained and I witnessed the role of that tugboat in helping our ship to exit safely this giant ship from the port. It helped our ship to maneuver with agility from a tight spot and helped it come into a space from where sailing on the high sea was smooth and possible. As we started sailing, the tugboat trailed for a while and then took a quiet U turn - perhaps to be ready for another such service! Isn’t it fascinating that without knowing it purposefully, we all enact a role of a tugboat in our daily life? At home, a member of a family tries to pitch in by contributing into family’s finances and well being (contribution). As a parent, it is about steering lives of our children with their safety in mind until we breathe last (safety). As an employee, collaborating with other colleagues to achieve organisational goals and celebrate each other’s success (collaboration and celebration). As a friend, it’s steering course of lives of our friends - especially in their hour of need (strong allies). As a son or daughter, trying to love back (aka. repay debt) our parents due to their sacrifices which might have helped us to be a person that we are (gratitude). One can keep on adding characteristics of a tugboat - we are not talking about a tugboat but ourselves after all!
