Clean technologies can have a long lead time to commercialisation, which may not be suited to the traditional venture capital model of 5-year cycles. Public policy has an important role to play to de-risk these investments, create demand for clean technologies and phase out incumbent technology.

The rise of clean technologies in Europe offers a positive vision for the continent: a new generation of industry is rising, bringing with it good-paying manufacturing jobs, reindustrialising after decades of offshoring, and contributing to our energy security.

According to the IEA, more than half of the cumulative emission reductions necessary to shift to a net-zero economy path come from technologies that are still not commercially available. Scaling up clean technology is therefore a crucial objective in the race to net zero. 

Europe is indeed a key player there. Over the past decade, European cleantech companies have developed world-leading batteries, electrolysers, and supercapacitors, as well as near-zero carbon steel and cement technologies. This tech leadership could underpin Europe’s competitiveness, energy resilience and decarbonisation for decades to come.

Obviously Cleantech is there to reduce or eliminate negative ecological impact. But the concept embraces a diverse range of products, services, and processes across industry verticals that are also designed to provide superior performance at lower costs and improve the productive and responsible use of natural resources. So its not only technological but also a question of societal maturity. Possibly the source of a totally new paradigm equivalent to the "renaissance" or the birth of the industrial area.

Thank you to the European Patent Office and European Investment Bank (EIB) for preparing this informative and detailed report on financing and commercialisation of cleantech innovation. It’s great to see that patenting activity in cleantech is increasing in all areas of the world and encouraging to see that smaller organisations are especially active in this area.
