On the cross-country flight home from a wonderful and busy BIO International Convention, I spent some time reflecting on three years here at the National Pharmaceutical Council. I still remember flying to DC as the brand-new President and CEO of the organization in June 2021 – a trip that simultaneously feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago, given the changes in the industry, health policy, and research environment. The work of NPC has never been more relevant — or more important. We have a great team, and this team appreciates the challenges we face. Here are three reflections I’d offer for anyone interested in the future of innovation. • To meet the challenges of today and tomorrow, NPC has built new capabilities that allow us to build on our 70-year legacy as we conduct rigorous, policy-relevant research and communicate it with impact. Biggest change include, unsurprisingly: 3️⃣ Pfizer with -41% following the end of the COVID vaccine frenzy 💉 Note here that Moderna is not in this top but AstraZeneca managed to keep a +3.3% growth rate YoY and its legendary French leader announced 2 days ago a +19% revenue growth in Q1 24. Massive 👏! 🔟 Eli Lilly and Company and 1️⃣1️⃣ Novo Nordisk with respectively +20% and +31.5% fueling insane growth trajectories and paving the way for years of mega blockbuster performance…IF the US system (and the patients) can handle it 😅 Side note: out of the top 20, 2 companies only are Gx players ie Teva Pharmaceuticals and Viatris. #News: GSK is the latest to turn its back on prominent industry lobbying group Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO), following a string of exits by companies including Pfizer, UCB, WuXi AppTec and Takeda. The British drugmaker has opted not to renew its #BIO membership for 2025 following an annual evaluation of its corporate memberships and trade association participation, a spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “We remain committed to fostering a policy environment that prioritizes disease prevention, addresses health equity and access barriers, and incentivizes sustainable innovation,” the company representative added. “At this time, we believe there are other areas we can focus our resources.” #GSK’s split from the group follows in the footsteps of #Takeda, which also decided not to renew its membership after its own routine review back in April. Before that, #WuXiAppTec hit the exit due to BIO’s support of the recently House-confirmed #BIOSECUREAct, which specifically targets five Chinese life science companies including WuXi AppTec and WuXi Biologics.
