exactly, video editors are not graphic designer as well
Clarification for Recruiters: The Distinct Role of Graphic Designers As a professional Graphic Designer, I'd like to address a common misconception: Graphic Designers are NOT: ✗ UI/UX Editors ✗ Video Editors ✗ Social Media Handlers ✗ Creative Team Leads ✗ Motion Graphics Editors/Animators We specialize in: ✓ Visual communication ✓ Branding and identity design ✓ Print and digital graphics ✓ Typography and layout ✓ Product & Signage Design Respect our expertise: Don't assume one person can master all creative disciplines. Each field requires unique skills and training. When hiring Graphic Designers, look for: ✓ Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) ✓ Strong visual design skills! ✓ Understanding of branding and typography! Let's appreciate the distinct value Graphic Designers bring to your team! Share with fellow designers and recruiters to spread awareness! #GraphicDesign #Recruitment #Clarification #SpecializationMatters #DesignCommunity #videoediting #graphicdesigners #videoeditors #job #vacancy

I cannot emphasise this enough. Stop expecting graphic designers to do everything. Hire a copywriter, a social media manager, and a UI/UX designer seperately. These are four different job descriptions, and four different skill sets. Graphic Designers should not be paying the price for corporate greed and an unwillingness to hire the required number of employees.

As a graphic designer on the lookout for new opportunities, I've noticed a growing trend during the hiring process that I believe deserves attention. Many companies ask for assignments to gauge candidates' skill levels. While a short task might be reasonable, especially since portfolios should already showcase our abilities, it's frustrating to see companies assigning an 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘴 without first discussing the budget or details of the position. Candidates are juggling 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 already—repeatedly answering the same questions that are clearly detailed in our resumes, doing multiple assignments a day, networking in the industry, and tailoring custom resumes and cover letters for each application. Recently, a company contacted me, asked for a brief on my experience, my current and expected CTC, and scheduled an "interview" immediately. When I joined the call, I was greeted by a UX designer, a recent graduate with 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘴 at the company. After a quick introduction and a glance at my portfolio (literally less than 2 minutes), the interview was over in 𝟲 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 precisely. Fifteen minutes later, I received a 𝙢𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩: to create a 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 for a campaign for their feature launch, including motion graphic videos, branding, logo design, color palette, typography, and a set of social media assets (Instagram post, Facebook banner, LinkedIn carousel)—all within 𝟰𝟴 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀. Upon calling HR to discuss the volume of work, I was simply given more time. Their reasoning for the large assignment? They mentioned having many candidates for the position and that this was the only way to shortlist. Is this really a 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? I’d love to hear thoughts from others in the creative industry. 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 do we draw the line between demonstrating our skills and being asked to complete what amounts to free labor?? Also, it's worth noting that this was a Graphic Designer role. While there’s often some overlap between creative fields, it’s important to recognize the distinctions: Graphic Designers are not Animators. Animators are not Video Editors. Video Editors are not 3D Artists. 3D Artists are not Motion Graphic Designers. Motion Graphic Designers are not Logo Designers. Logo Designers are not UX/UI Designers. Each of these roles comes with its own unique skill set, and while many of us may dabble in more than one, it’s important to set realistic expectations for the expertise required in each field. #GraphicDesign #CreativeIndustry #JobSearch #Hiring #FairWork #DesignAssignments #BeBetter #HR
