They may be futuristic, but they don’t hold a candle to the thoughtfully designed, beautiful manufactured housing communities being built today. Today’s communities are crafted for comfort, aesthetics, and a true sense of belonging. From spacious layouts and modern amenities to well-manicured landscapes, they reflect the best of modern living. Yet, there’s one thing the 2045 Stacks have that many of today’s communities still don’t: ⚡ A high-speed connection to the digital world. Connectivity matters—but it’s just one piece of the puzzle. The Power of Design: Crafting Communities, Not Just Buildings Winston Churchill's insight, 'We shape our buildings. Thereafter our buildings shape us,' has profound implications for architecture and urban planning. This resonates deeply with my experiences abroad, where I felt the impact of thoughtful design on community life. Recent studies, using wearable technology, have shown that building facades significantly influence our physiological responses. This knowledge is crucial when considering the role of beauty in architecture and its impact on community building. Research indicates that social offerings, openness, and beauty are far more important than economic factors in creating lasting emotional connections within communities. The pedestrian experience is instinctual; harmoniously designed facades engage the mind pleasantly, while blank or incoherent ones alienate it. Intriguingly, our brains are most aroused by patterns with about 20% redundancy of elements, similar to many traditional architectural styles. This balance between repetition and variety aligns with our innate aesthetic preferences. Moreover, a study in The New York Times found that regular exposure to beauty increases openness to strangers, triggering oxytocin release that promotes empathy and trust. By designing harmonious buildings, we encourage social interaction and community bonding. We have the opportunity to create spaces that nurture well-being, foster social connections, and endure through time. Maybe we should consider ~ What kind of world do we want to build? 🏠Have you been following what's going on in the real estate world lately? It's pretty exciting how things are changing and evolving in Real estate. I thought I'd share some of the coolest emerging trends I have come across. You might find them as fascinating as I do: i] Co-living spaces ii] Tiny homes iii] And 3D-printed houses. 1— First up, Co-living spaces. Imagine living in a place where you have your own bedroom but share areas like the kitchen, living room & workspace with other people. It's kind of like living in a college dorm but for adults. It's a great way to meet like-minded people, save money on rent, and enjoy some awesome amenities. Perfect for city dwellers who crave community but also want their own space. — 2— Next, let's talk about Tiny homes.  These are small houses usually under 400 square feet, but packed with clever storage solutions and multi-functional furniture. Tiny homes are all about minimalism and efficiency, making the most out of every inch of space. Living in a tiny home means: - You can own a place without breaking the bank - Reduce your environmental footprint  And just live a simpler life. Plus, they can be pretty affordable, which is a huge bonus. — 3— Lastly, have you heard about 3D-printed houses? This one sounds straight out of a sci-fi movie. Basically, they use giant 3D printers to construct homes layer by layer using materials like concrete. It’s cheaper and faster than traditional construction, and some of the designs are really innovative. This method can drastically cut down on construction time and costs. It's also great for creating affordable housing quickly, especially in areas hit by natural disasters or in developing countries.  … These trends are changing the way we think about homes. I've always believed that everything we interact with should evoke a certain vibe, a feeling that resonates within us. Whether it's the sleek lines of a sports car, the soaring majesty of an aircraft, or the inviting warmth of a well-designed home, good design and architecture have the power to stir emotions and create lasting impressions. However, in recent years, it seems that engineering and design have been leaning towards a more utilitarian approach, focusing solely on functionality and efficiency while neglecting the importance of emotion and feeling in a space. This shift has led me to ponder: How can we engineer and design spaces that not only serve their intended purpose but also evoke a tangible feeling within those who inhabit them? One key aspect lies in understanding the psychology of space. Just as colors can evoke specific emotions, so too can the design and layout of a space influence our mood and behavior. By carefully considering elements such as lighting, texture, scale, and flow, we can create environments that elicit a desired emotional response. Moreover, storytelling through design can play a pivotal role in crafting meaningful experiences. Every space has a narrative waiting to be told, whether it's the history of a building, the vision of its creators, or the aspirations of its inhabitants. By weaving these narratives into the fabric of our designs, we can imbue spaces with a sense of purpose and identity, allowing people to connect with them on a deeper level. Ultimately, engineering a feeling in a space requires a holistic approach that marries technical proficiency with artistic sensibility. It's about striking a balance between form and function, beauty and utility, to create environments that not only serve our practical needs but also enrich our lives in profound and meaningful ways. As architects and designers, it's our responsibility to champion this ethos and push the boundaries of what's possible. By embracing the power of emotion in our work, we can transform spaces into vibrant, dynamic, and soul-stirring environments that inspire, uplift, and resonate with all who encounter them. People-watching isn't just a pastime; it plays a significant role in fostering community, providing entertainment, and enhancing the social dynamics of a place. Thoughtfully designed spaces encourage people to linger, interact, and observe. This can be achieved through well-placed seating areas, open plazas, transparent facades, and strategically designed sightlines. By incorporating the elements that facilitate people-watching, we create more vibrant, engaging, and human-centric environments.
