#WeekendSeries10 | Vata-Kapha prakriti that I am, ideas come and go in a matter of seconds. But being around people who have always encouraged me to chase those ideas with substance, to make it into something concrete has been a blessing. Sometimes, personalities inspire us from afar - one such is Ratan Tata who remains the face of the brand for at least two to three generations of Indians. I, too, am no exception.
Three of Ratanji's qualities that I hold close to my heart are: empathy with those who are struggling, compassion towards fellow-beings and a positive aggression to see a vision to fruition. While it is empathy that makes a person feel for a person's suffering, doing something about it is where it makes a significant difference - that is compassion.
As an entrepreneur, what I found most interesting was that employees working under the Tata umbrella continue to feel emotionally attached to the company. Ratan Tata ensured that he kept alive the belief of group founder Jamshedji Tata, that people need to be taken care of, and they will take care of the rest.
Since childhood, I have wanted to do something significant with my life, ever inspired by my paternal uncle, a successful businessman who I saw chase his dreams day and night. Even when my batchmates at medical school were preparing for PSC, it never fascinated me - my 3-month internship at a Government Primary Health Centre made it clear that my real potential would remain underutilised in such a setting.
Diving headlong into Tanmatra Ayurveda was one of the best things that happened to me. As crazy as it seemed to those around me, opening our clinic immediately after Covid helped me articulate my ideas in a way that gives me immense contentment.
In 'The Tatas: How a Family Built a Business and a Nation', author Girish Kuber describes how at the Tata Indica plant in Pune, Ratanji had a robot in place after noticing that assembling a particular part would require a worker to bend twice. So if the aim was to manufacture 300 cars a day, it meant workers had to bend 600 times a day! He said we cannot allow such back-breaking work to be done by our people. For Tata, empathy translated into compassion, as naturally as the air that he breathed.
Ratanji is one personality whose qualities I hope to adopt in my entrepreneurial journey. In my third year of 'raising' Tanmatra Ayurveda, I still trip and fall, but persist nevertheless, humbled by the progress of each patient. Every morning, it is one of the most sacred parts of my 'me-time', reminding myself of the need to live with reinforced compassion. RIP Ratanji.
