A Lesson from the Hair Salon: Understanding Market Shifts Yesterday, while getting a haircut at a salon, I struck up a conversation with the barber. As we chatted, he mentioned, “Nowadays, these particular brand blades aren’t as good in quality.” I replied, “But this is a well-known brand, right? Their blades are more expensive than others.” He responded, “That used to be true. They’ve lowered their prices, but the quality has dropped too.” Curious, I asked, “Do you know why?” He explained, “They’re focusing on manufacturing quality trimmers because younger generations like you are moving from traditional shaving to trimming. People want various styles for their beards, which is why they prefer salon services over shaving at home.” He continued, “This brand realizes that if their prices are too high, salon owners won’t choose their products. So, they’ve compromised on quality while reducing prices, leaving customers unaware of the blade quality.” I was amazed. This lesson wasn’t something I learned in a classroom; it came from a casual chat in a salon. This experience highlighted a crucial point: you need to analyze who your customers are and understand their needs. When that brand targets actual consumers, they focus on quality. How to Capture the Attention of High-End Customers for a Thai Hair Extension Brand? The most rewarding aspect of business is often not a one-time transaction, but being able to witness and participate in a client's brand growth journey. When we first met this Thai hair extension brand, they primarily served general hair salon customers, purchasing basic wig display racks from us. As their popularity grew in the Thai market, they began attracting more high-end clients, including renowned hair salons and beauty centers. "Our product quality has always been excellent, but now we need to make our overall image more refined," the brand owner told us in a message. She shared that high-end customers are extremely demanding about every detail, from display methods to packaging aesthetics, all of which influence their perception of the brand. At the weekend I was reminded of the importance of creating/providing something that your target market *needs and wants*. I speak to clients about this all the time, but this analogy that I happened across is one I'll use to explain it in layman's terms moving forward as I think it really resonates (and because we hate jargon). For years, men have been able to walk into a barber's shop and simply sit and wait for a quick trim. In my personal experience, this hasn't been available in women's salons (or at least, none that I have known of). It's book your appointment in advance, spend about an hour minimum and a small fortune there etc. etc. Now for those who don't know me too well, I am what I would call in my daft Yorkshire vocabulary, a 'rubbish girl'. Not a fan of makeup, usually grab a quick shower, teeth and hair brush in the morning and am out of the door, not into pampering and all that jazz. So the concept of a 'while you wait' haircut is the absolute DREAM for me. And guess what I found in Ripon at the weekend? EXACTLY THAT. I was in and out of that salon in less than 20 minutes for a mere £12.99 with a lovely, tidy hair cut. The owner of this salon has created something that busy women who are less interested in the (admittedly very nice) pampering side of getting your hair done, have been crying out for. Hair Extensions Specialist Instagram Redesign 📱 Meet our client: a super busy salon owner. She has a dedicated clientele focused solely on hair extensions. With virtually NO time to create her own content, Instagram is crucial for attracting new clients and showcasing her work as a portfolio. Her brand colors were already established, so our job was to translate these into a cohesive Instagram aesthetic that she’d love. We work with several hair extension specialists, and it’s important that the feed isn’t just a ‘wall of hair.’ Instead, we focus on creating visual interest and highlighting the incredible work they do.
