10 years ago Simon and I had a crazy idea to build a luxury boutique wellness resort and purchased 10 acres of swampy land on Caye Caulker island, Belize. We secured Canadian investors for the hotel and we spent significant sums on architect fees, designs, planning permissions, Environmental Impact Assessment reports and government and island council community engagement approval. The hotel designs were amazing and had the first water bungalows in Belize. Ten years on I can announce we have now, finally in 2024… built absolutely nothing, failed to construct anything on the land and have little to show for our decade of efforts and sums spent. ❌ Canadian investors bailed ❌ EIA approval expired ❌ Hotel plans ditched ❌ Multiple subsequent projects aborted We HAVE however had the best times travelling in and around Belize on our many visits to Caye Caulker. We have had some epic (and sometimes downright dangerous) adventures, done some brilliantly bonkers stuff, met wonderful people, eaten the best food, drunk a lot of margaritas, made new friends and generally had monumental fun while pretending to work very hard. In that time we’ve sold a little land and bought a lot more. High risk, chance of losing everything, zero profit? Absolutely. And so we’re back on Caye Caulker this week. Attempt #6, this time to build a handful of high-spec villas on one of our plots. Let’s see if we can deliver something, anything in 2024-34. Make. It. Fun.
