Climate resilience is increasingly gaining attention (and financing). The US has published the first-of-kind "Climate Resilience Game Changers Assessment" report. > In just the past six months, the United States has experienced 15 different billion-dollar climate disasters.  > Against the backdrop of these challenges, the Biden-Harris Administration is taking unprecedented action to confront the climate crisis which includes investing more than $50 billion in climate resilience to help communities prepare for and recover from extreme weather events > The report identifies 28 critical technologies, management practices, and institutional and financial tools that can drive transformative positive impacts on climate resilience. PMIC hosted an engaging session with Mr. Hamid Sarfraz an expert on Climate Risk and resilience. As climate change increasingly affects vulnerable communities, the urgency for adaptation and designing innovative solutions has never been greater. Key takeaways from the session: - How MFPs can proactively adapt to climate risks. - Strategies to embed climate resilience into lending models. - Supporting communities in adopting climate resilient practices. The knowledge shared was instrumental in shaping PMIC’s ongoing efforts to build a financial ecosystem that not only empowers poor and underserved communities but also protects them from the growing impacts of climate change.

Our 🆕 report "Building a Climate for Peace: Climate Security in South Asia", explores how climate security risks in the region are interconnected. Using four future climate fragility risk scenarios on water, ecosystems and territories, non-economic loss and damage, and human migration and displacement, the report illustrates the interconnectedness of these risks. Finally, it considers possible avenues for future policy initiatives, arguing for reinvigorating regional institutions, building cooperation and trust through disaster risk management, and unifying a regional voice in global multilateral mechanisms. A collaboration by adelphi and Kubernein Initiative, the report and its recommendations are a culmination of an intensive process of desk research, expert interviews as well as a virtual and in-person consultative workshop. The publication builds on existing knowledge and expertise to bring in new perspectives, connect seemingly disparate issues and offer actionable ideas in a region that has been disconnected for far too long. Some key highlights: The report examines how climate uncertainty, combined with South Asia's varied geography, rich biodiversity, and complex socio-economic makeup, creates an interconnected web of risks for the region. 🔵 It presents four future climate fragility risk scenarios focusing on: 1. Water, Weather and Economies 2. Ecosystems and Territories  3. Non-economic Loss and Damage 4. Human Migration and Displacement  These scenarios illustrate the interconnected nature of climate risks in South Asia. 🔵 The report emphasises the need to reinvigorate regional institutions and build cooperation through disaster risk management to effectively address climate challenges, and highlights the importance of unifying South Asia's voice in global multilateral mechanisms to better address climate concerns.

Hot off the press!   "Building a Climate for Peace: Climate Security in South Asia” - a report produced through a collaboration between Kubernein Initiative and adelphi. Drawing out four scenarios that put the lives and livelihood of people in South Asia at risk in the face of climate change, the report presents pathways for building greater climate resilience in the region. Pathways that do not require a re-invention of the wheel, such as opportunities to reinvigorate existing regional institutions towards specific areas of engagement, and building cooperation on disaster risk management that often have region wide impacts and are not limited to a national boundary. Yesterday, I went to an event on “Funding resilience: Unlocking financial potential for climate adaptation” at the world climate summit and I wanted to share a few key points: 🦜Adaptation has become necessary to allow development and growth to continue - especially as climate change undermines efforts against poverty, getting people to school, fighting diseases, etc. 🪂 Climate insurance can buy us time and is as such an important part of disaster resilience. However, the key thing to consider is then what you do with that time - and we need to be at a place where we now build back better and increase resilience for future climate impacts. 🌟A few of the things at the top of the wish-list of things to do from the two great panelists Paola Ridolfi and Nick Faull: - Acknowledge the extent of the problem to build the case for finance: we need to acknowledge that there is a problem at a policy level in each country and put pressure at government level to keep funding adaptation and resilience - also as part of development financing - Work bottom up with communities: these are the people who know what is needed, where the river changes course, where people need to be relocated, and where resources and technical skills at community level is needed. - Bring private and public sector to talk about adaptation as an investment: have the cost of no action factored in, but also the revenue that will come from this investment seeing as activities like shipment and operations can continue.
