It is with a heavy heart that the Board of Directors of the Junior State of America (JSA) is announcing the closure and dissolution of the organization effective August 31, 2024. After 90 years of inspiring student engagement in civics and activism, and after long business considerations, we have made this difficult decision to officially close the organization. While this chapter of JSA's history is coming to an end, the impact of our organization will continue to resonate through the hundreds of thousands of lives touched by our programs. Thank you for being a part of the JSA community and for your unwavering commitment to being the people who make a difference. Read the full announcement at https://bit.ly/4ciIIqc.
So sad to hear this. JSA was a transformative part of both my high school and adult path, and continues to shape me now. Lifelong friendships and important life lessons shared by thousands of others I’m sure.
90 years ago a handful of high school students gathered together at a fireplace at a small boys school in the Santa Cruz mountains. Under the tutelage of Prof Earnest A Rogers, those students wanted to join together with other students—men and women alike—to share the experience of self-governance, ethics and reasoned debate as the foundation of America’s constitutional democracy. These Junior Statesmen of America stood in bipartisan opposition to fascism and communism, both of which were on the march and attractive to many young people then. Over the years, the organization grew coast to coast and across the heartland. JSA cultivated a deep love for America, a passion for learning and critical thinking (Summer Schools, state government symposia, and speakers programs), and the joy of livelong friendships across every form of political divide (conventions, elections, and working together in cabinet). It’s mottos were Make Democracy Work and Democracy is Not a Spectator Sport. I for one believe the lessons it taught remain as true and needed as ever.
No! I am so sad to see this news. I feel like JSA saved my life as a young kid. It gave me purpose. It was where I made my best friends and it probably got me into a competitive college. JSA is where I built a passion for public service, which then led me to the Navy and numerous jobs in government. My wife and I even met there in High School! I don't know why this incredible organization has to shut down. But I hope the values and impacts are carried forward.
Thank you, JSA.
There is not a sad button on LinkedIn but if there was one I would pick it! Just heartbreaking.
As a young person, JSA changed my life. I am saddened to hear this.
Thank you for bringing passion and community to my life at a time when I truly needed it. I would not have made it where I am today without the experiences and friendships from this organization ❤️
A very sad day. I am so sorry to hear this. JSA has been an important part of my life and I will miss it.
JSA completely changed my life… so grateful for the safe space it provided for learning and civic engagement. Thank you, JSA ❤️

5moAlthough I'm incredibly saddened by this news, I hope other organizations such as the Civic Leaders of America can continue to uphold core JSA values and inspire civic engagement among our youth.
