But have you ever wondered how much such a recall costs and impact it has on the brand image and reputation of the company?

Product Recalls are costly in many ways:
- Recall communication campaigns cost a lot of money and may require expensive advertising campaigns
- Trial by press release can hurt the reputation of the manufacturer
- Product liability may increase
- Scrutiny may increase often revealing other lesser problems and vulnerabilities and turning them into full scale crises.
Because Recall Communications can be complicated, PR practitioners play a critical role in the process. Many other departments are also affected by a recall. Sales, Marketing, Packaging, Distribution, Quality Control and even researchers will be involved. Close coordination of the recall together with controlled communication is vital.
Some companies fear that widespread disclosure and negative publicity of product defects may be harmful to their reputations. Yet, it is often, how swiftly and professionally, an organization deals with it, that can make all the difference. The reputation for product safety and reliability the organization had prior to the recall also plays a role.
Handling a product recall professionally will also safeguard that reputational asset of the organization. This implies:
- That the organization must be ready to communicate when the time comes. Holding statements and relationships with Advertisers and other professional service providers need to be in place.
- That detailed instructions be given to consumers on how to return the product and how they will be refunded.
- Handling the return of products must be handled logistically and in a professional manner.
- That due thought be given to dealer relations, service levels, transparency, legal requirements and best practice.
