Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO, this morning on CNBC: “People have moved from largely trying to save costs to figuring out how to modernize their infrastructure again…to think about how to use generative AI to change their business.” “AI will transform every customer experience that we know.” While I can hear your eye-rolls from here - this is not another AI post. What I found notable about Andy Jassy’s comments this morning, is that businesses are coming out of the “cutting-costs to bare bones” phase of expense management. Even Amazon wasn’t immune to customers down-sizing their AWS contracts. However, sentiment is turning back to opportunity and growth. This is good news for companies that were able to successfully navigate the last 18 months of moving from growth-at-all-costs to profitability-at-all-costs. Amazon increased yearly sales by $2.4 billion by adding a one-click buy button. Here is the powerful underlying lesson all of us can take from this. A few years back, before a boarding meeting, my client's CIO invited me to a review. He was excited to share his progress on a company-wide Microsoft migration. As we sat down to review - I asked questions like, "What happens if we switch from one product flow to another?” “How will this adapt for our geographically expansion as different markets have different regulators?” “How will this adapt if the organization changes priority and wants to bring costs down? His excitement soon turned into confusion. He confessed that he didn’t even think about it. The team was so focused on implementing the tool but forgot to take all the business outcomes into consideration. While Amazon focused on simplifying user experience with a clear business goal, so often we can get caught up in the technology itself - losing sight of strategic impact. The key lessons here are: - All activity is not progress. - Success loves speed. - Bottom line impact is the only measure that matters. One of the best GenAI implementations I have seen is on Amazon. It was super cumbersome to go through all the reviews. Search was helpful, but it still took time. Now, Amazon shows which are the top asked questions. That’s awesome as a buyer. Now I know what all I should look for. I’m sure many buyers didn’t have that info since many start their research from Amazon. Secondly, you can ask a specific question you have and based on the reviews (maybe product description too), Amazon will answer that question. It is saving me time and giving me the exact answer too. Which other company/product have to seen implement GenAI well rather than checking a box?
