The #decarbonisation of aviation is a sensitive issue, but one that is crucial in today's world. ✈ 📈 Forecasts and studies aren’t predicting a fall in demand in the years ahead. Technological efficiency is cited as a potential lever for decarbonizing aviation by reducing fuel consumption up to ~30%. However, these marginal gains will be offset by the increase in demand in the coming years. Replacing traditional jet fuels with new, more sustainable fuels is an interesting lever to analyze in order to reduce the negative climatic impact of the aviation sector. However, these new sustainable fuels, known as SAFs, face a number of challenges. ➡ Find out more about this technology in the article Sia Partners has just published (link in the first comment).

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs): Aviation's key to a low carbon future? Free Webinar Thu, 28 Mar 2024, 10am (EST) https://lnkd.in/edEbKxH4 Aviation accounted for 2% of global carbon emissions in 2022 and with passenger numbers expected to double by 2050, the sector will continue to be the fastest-growing source of transport emissions. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) are drop-in fuels that can provide immediate emission reduction benefits, but continue to face obstacles to scaling production, questioning this technology’s capacity to decarbonize the sector. #globaldata #oilandgas

Aviation is on the brink of a dramatic transformation. For over 120 years, the industry has contributed to global greenhouse gas emissions. Now, like all other sectors, aviation is mandated to achieve carbon neutrality within the next 26 years. Despite its complexity and the high capital and operating expenses, aviation’s unmatched convenience has made it a dominant force in transporting people and goods—an essential service. However, failing to meet the carbon neutrality mandate could disrupt the entire transportation industry, jeopardizing regional connectivity and essential services worldwide. Experts from the International Council on Clean Transportation warn that the aviation industry must produce at least 10,000 zero-emission aircraft by 2043 to meet this mandate. Meanwhile, recent research reveals that the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) generates more emissions than previously estimated, further amplifying the need for true zero-emission solutions. This is where the challenge lies: the rigorous design approval processes that have made aviation the safest mode of transport are too sophisticated to swiftly approve such a large number of radically new designs. The situation is further complicated by the growing Urban Air Mobility sector, which, despite attracting significant attention and resources, does little to address the broader needs of the aviation industry. The urgent demand for a diverse range of zero-emission aircraft by the mid-2030s means that more projects must begin now. Early investment in the zero-emission aviation sector, which is poised for rapid growth, presents a unique opportunity to make a tangible difference for communities, contribute to climate restoration, and achieve a solid return on investment by joining the $500B USD per year aircraft market. We want to hear from you! If you’re an aviation professional, how your organisation is preparing to operate under the emission reduction laws? And for those in deeptech, cleantech, or climatetech investment, what do you think about the opportunities in sustainable aviation? Why investment in aviation decarbonization is important to the environment? According to current estimates, aircraft contributes 12% of the global transportation-related CO2 pollution. It is significant to highlight that flights longer than 1,500 kilometers account for about 80% of aviation's CO2 emissions. Following the epidemic, carbon dioxide emissions increased once more in tandem with rising passenger and flight numbers, according to aviation industry indicators. This suggests that new technologies that have the potential to greatly improve emissions reduction must be introduced. According to European Commission decarbonization scenarios, the Green Deal should result in 89% lower emissions. While a peak in emissions is anticipated by 2025, most of the reduction in emissions is anticipated to occur after 2030, with a 61% decline from 2030 to 2050. To replace aircraft and introduce new technology, significant investments of EUR 378 billion will be required between 2020 and 2050. This investment might result in increased industry efficiency and reduced operating costs, which could offset the rise in fuel prices brought on by the increased use of SAF.
