Working in an international environment is an opportunity to meet people from other cultural backgrounds. Working with the language is not only about being able to speak a foreign language, but also about having a deeper understanding of the habits, mentality or situations that exist in a given nationality. The working culture in each country differs, although there are similarities. On German work culture in the video below. However, it is important to take note that things are not always as they say, but by learning about interculturalism, you can then observe in practice what works and what is no longer valid. Cross-cultural communication is always a hot topic. Working with different nationalities teaches you fast that there's no one-size-fits-all. I’ve worked with Italians, Scots, Germans, French, Chinese, and Americans, and every time required a different approach. For example, in my experience, Italians tend to be more expressive, especially over email, which felt a bit overwhelming at first. The solution? Regular calls and calm, clear conversations. It worked like a charm. But of course, stereotypes are just that — stereotypes, and they don’t always hold true. For example, in my experience, working with Germans has always been very structured, clear, and logical. However, I remember a time when a German managing partner came to Moscow for a pitch. I was concerned that we didn’t have a concrete plan for what to do after the pitch, but he surprised me by saying, “Let’s sell first, then figure out the details.” It was unexpected, but refreshing to hear from a German. What has been your experience? #crosscultural #cultural #differences #culturalexperiences #theculturalmap #insights #workinsights #italians #germans

“Latvians are closed off,” they said... . . People often say about Latvia—and the Baltics—that people here are a bit reserved... ...a little “cold.” Sure, there are moments that fit this: People don’t smile much on the street Customer service can feel… brief.. to say the least And it’s true, warmth isn’t as openly displayed as it might be in other cultures. But our experience? So far, it’s been full of surprising moments of connection. Just recently, our interviewee invited us for a slice of homemade Latvian cake. It was such a generous, unexpected gesture and totally challenged that “Latvian coldness” stereotype. Coming from the north, I feel like I kinda get it. We need to melt a bit and then can be the warmest people you know But for many of my SDSI classmates from more outwardly warm cultures, this has been such a fascinating contrast. Have you had experiences that challenged cultural assumptions? #ServiceDesign #Latvia #Baltics #SDSI #CulturalExchange
