Joy Burnford’s Post

Fascinating conversation over lunch with business leaders about how we can be better allies to women in the workplace. Many thanks to Holly Addison and Chris Smith at Leathwaite for being such generous hosts and to two very active male allies Robert Baker and Brian McNamara, CEO of Haleon plc, for kick-starting our conversation. Some insights that stood out: ✅ The importance of authenticity. Allyship shouldn’t involve helping women to become something they’re not. Women often feel different from men and need to know that it’s not only OK, but important, that they are.  ✅ The importance of good line management. Line managers can be powerful enablers of progress, but can also stand in its way. The key is to make sure they feel able, and safe, to ask questions and be vulnerable. ✅ Make this a priority. As one guest pointed out, if a company finds itself losing customers it knows exactly which levers to pull and will waste no time in pulling them. But if it’s losing female employees it often has no idea what to do about it.  ✅ Being ready for success: Getting more women into leadership roles is just the start. What matters next is that the organisation is ready to accommodate new viewpoints and to be changed.  ✅ Sponsorship is key to enabling female progression and retention. This is a simple, yet often untapped, act of allyship in many organisations. Communicate the differences between sponsorship, coaching and mentoring. Great to hear your insights Edwina Dunn OBE, Jeremy Carter, Clare Barley, Natasha Frangos, James Bardrick and thanks to our Strategy Director, Edward Haigh, who has always been a great ally to me. Do get in touch if you’d like to chat more about what good allyship looks like and how you can make it happen in your organisation. #allyship #genderequality #femaleretention #authenticleadership #dontfixwomen

It was a pleasure to host such a fascinating discussion and great group of people on behalf of Leathwaite

Thank you for including me. The work you’ve done on line managers is spot in my experience and its conclusions are reconfirmed in so many of these conversations with other managers.
