So the Ground Engineering Magazine Sustainability Conference was fantastic, not for its networking or its delegates (which were great) but for its content, the presentations and excellent presenters.
Climate change is real, sustainability can only ever be delivered if its considered at feasibility and outline design stage. No point, when procuring your supply chain to ask them about their sustainability approach, its too late.
It has to be founded on data driven decisions as we have to do things differently to how we have always done them, the insurers demand the data.
We can get the data if we shift to the upfront spend for better investigations, for better data capture, for better data analysis. Which will deliver cost and carbon savings in delivery. Sustainability isn't more expensive if you do it from the start, it only seems to cost more if you do it late in the project lifecycle.
Finally we have to shout more about all the things we are doing that are supporting Sustainable Ground Engineering. Every infrastructure project requires it so whats stopping us delivering it? Yesterday proved there is a lot being done, its just most Clients don't know it.
So my pledge is to promote more of the sustainable things our sector does and to challenge our Clients and designers about the sustainability credentials of the projects we deliver in the future.
Whats your pledge?
