Was your first job your true calling? I consider myself fortunate to land my first job as a #publicrelations professional at the largest shopping center in Surabaya. Why Are They Not Listening to Me? Getting frustrated was a constant emotion I felt, and not being understood was another. These feelings did not help at all when I was a manager with many internal customers (my colleagues) to work with, as well as senior managers to report to. These emotions did not assist me in being effective or productive. I felt like a rat in a running wheel every day. And sometimes it got so bad, I cannot even stop feeling all these frustration even after work. Yet I knew I had good recommendations and ideas. I could help my team as well as my reports. But why wasn't I getting through to them? What was I communicating that they did not understand? Some years after I left my role as a manager, I learned about influence and impact. It’s not about what I want to convey or how I want to convey it that matters. It’s about how my colleagues and reporting managers perceive what I am communicating that makes them decide if they want to listen. Influence and impact involve both verbal and non-verbal communication. Powerful influence and impact involves evoking the appropriate emotion needed to add to both the verbal and non-verbal. Lastly, the language used. After applying what I learned, things ran better. My ideas were finally being heard and valued. I felt more ease and flow. You can turn your frustration into effective communication. You can learn to influence and impact.
