Hiring! Hiring!! Hiring! Vacancy for a copywriter, visual designer, web designer, content writer, social media manager, video editor and other digital skills you can think of. This is what everyone wants to see and possibly having it be a service they can offer but there's one thing they keep missing - They don't have a portfolio. This is one of the mistakes I made when I decided to start out as a freelancer with a digital skill, I never knew what it was untill late last year. In this post I would mention some ways to get works to use for your portfolio, possibly in another I would mention best platform for portfolio and another a different thing. Here are some ways that you can get to build a Portfolio if you don't have one: 1. The need for a real time client experience as a freelancer, you have to be strategic and work for free with those that can benefit you, the church has always been and would always be a wonderful place to start with and others - DO STRATEGIC VOLUNTEERING/FREE WORK. 2. I know you want to charge your worth, but you have to start somewhere - OFFER YOUR SERVICES AT A DISCOUNTED PRICE. 3. During your time of having no clients you can work on FICTIONAL PROJECTS, and share on social media platforms that works for you. You spend hours on end applying for gigs. You do the same pitching your services. And then you make a critical mistake. You neglect to monitor your inbox and communicate efficiently with prospects. I've spoken with two editors this month who have run into the same issue: Freelance writers who apply/pitch and never respond. Freelance writers who take days (or longer) to respond. You put ALL that time and effort into catching a prospect's attention. Don't make one of ⬆ mistakes. Instead, do this: ✅ Closely monitor your email inbox, LinkedIn messages, phone, etc. ✅ Don't delay when responding to an interested client. ✅ Let your enthusiasm for the project shine through. If you're going to search for new business — and you should be doing this consistently — don't miss out on the reward by ignoring or overlooking messages from prospects. Making things pretty is like icing on a cake Surface level thing won't work It's the foundational thing that will get you views/leads And the foundation of any content is "writing" & "content delivery".
