This past September, I gave my talk "The Four Disciplines" at RfRx, the speaker series run by Recovering from Religion. 4Disc is the culmination of decades of reflection and practice having conversations in situations that are emotionally fraught, or with high stakes, and is a synthesis of the many frameworks I've learned for having difficult conversations in both professional and personal life. The Four Disciplines talk premiered tonight on the RfR Youtube channel, and is available now: https://lnkd.in/g2ZzenuW In the talk, I analyze 4 conversations that I had at various points in my career that have stayed with me, and I use these conversations as examples of how to navigate personally and professionally difficult situations. I use these 4 conversations, titled - Torpedo Terry (in which a leader in my organization derails a spec review) - Flaky Fran (in which there is a dysfunctional pattern of communication with a close friend) - Stubborn Stanley (in which a colleague brings an antivax narrative to daily standup) - Evasive Elian (in which an employee is hiding a skills gap) to tease out 4 mental disciplines which can put you in the drivers seat with the right frame of mind to create success in these difficult conversations. The 4 Disciplines are: - Seeking truth, by cultivating an attitude of skepticism and intellectual honesty - Examining methods of determining truth - Prioritizing relationship over winning an argument - Asking questions with genuine curiosity Have a listen and let me know what you think. Of course, I'm available to give this talk, or teach the 4 disciplines and conversation techniques as a class - reach out if you're interested.

Launching a series of being in dialogue with Sophie Stephenson I met Sophie Stephenson in 2009 when Candice Smith and I were developing Thinking Environment practitioners in Australia. Sophie, from England, lived and worked in Melbourne at that time. Subsequently, having qualified as both a Time to Think Coach and Facilitator in Australia, Sophie returned to England and went on to study with Nancy Kline and became a member of the Global Faculty of The Thinking Environment. Sophie and I share an unbounded bond from our early days of learning together. From this time, our shared love continues to deepen regarding exploratory conversations about all things Thinking Environment! Since it is Dialogue in a Thinking Environment that we will be using to explore the various topics we engage with, we decided to launch our project with a dialogue on Dialogue! Our inaugural video delves into the essence of Dialogue within the Thinking Environment. This aims to engage those interested in the intricacies of Thinking Environment theory and practice. This series is a result of our long-standing discussions and our desire to share the joy and depth of our conversations with a broader audience. (https://lnkd.in/dmnN-BV5) The second video in our dialogue series is between fellow Thinking Environment Faculty member Sophie Stephenson and myself, and here we tackle the Component of Dialogue. This component of The Thinking Environment has gone through more changes of definition than any other in the 19 years I have been exploring and teaching this fascinating body of thought and work. Originally named Diversity, its name changed to Difference to combat what I call the “corporatisation” of the word diversity. For me, it is a deeply personal subject which I find can be hard to grapple with, but immensely worth the effort. (https://lnkd.in/d43_UDcB) We invite you to watch our videos and join us in these thought-provoking dialogues on The Thinking Environment.

Our founder, Dr. Kazuo Inamori says, ✒ “We should trust in the unlimited capabilities given to us, and encourage ourselves by saying, "We can do it." In the planning process, however, we should review our concept from a pessimistic perspective while maintaining a strong will to achieve our goal no matter what. We should try to identify all potential problems and plan how we will deal with them.” ✨ To know more, click on the link: https://lnkd.in/gXyEVmtv

NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO RESONATE WITH YOUR MESSAGE, FREQUENCY OR TEACHINGS. Those of us who are on a journey of evolution & ascension understand the most powerful thing we can work on is our own frequency. We work hard on shifting, healing & alchemising ourself, our minds & our beliefs so that we physically operate in a high state. When people who reside in lower realms of existence come into this frequency it can trigger them. It’s kinda like being a ex-smoker; & then your seated at a table where someone is smoking. The smell, the taste, the feelings inside of you get triggered & fucked off. You can’t even be around it cause it’s so off putting. So, you politely move yourself. Energy effects us in a similar way, whereby people who hold a certain resonance in their being can really highlight in others the work that’s yet to be done. Does this make it bad, or wrong? No! What it’s showing us is where we are yet to master ourself. When we can be peaceful & observe these triggers like activations of a frequency - that has the potential to be medicine. We begin to take the path of mastery. Mastery of ourselves, our reactions and our energy. This is true evolution. Everything around us will present to us a lesson, a healing that’s needed or a belief that could shift. And instead of blaming the smoker for smoking. We look inside of ourselves at why we allowed ourself to be so effected by it. We begin to see pathways of responsibility & send love to the person who highlighted this on our behalf. As in truth we were ready for the lesson & shift of being. We can thank the lesson. Bless the sacred smoke & continue our journey in a new way that’s understanding & compassionate. This way of being is a magnet for those who are in resonance to work with us, to hear our message and learn our teachings. & a repellant for those who are not. Either way find a teacher who resides in love. That will lift your frequency & the frequency of the whole planet. All my love, Mel xx P.s 1:1 spaces are open for mentorship if you are in resonance 🤍🐉✨ Book a connection call here:

Joy. Is there joy in the story of your company, in the story of your success? Is there joy in your business communications? Joy is uniquely human, and all B2B is personal. Here’s Dr. Lonnie Smith et al performing The Whip. It’s simply, straightforward, and full of joy. I don't own this recording, nor do I profit from it. We've all been there. You come out of a heated exchange with someone on a topic you feel strongly about. Maybe you both struggled to find a satisfying conclusion, felt like the other person was not listening to your evidence, that you were both camping on your positions. You come away frustrated... But what if you were wrong? Rate from 1 (not like me) to 5 (very much like me) the following statements: 🔸I question my own opinions, positions, and viewpoints because they could be wrong. 🔸I reconsider my opinions when presented with new evidence. 🔸I recognize the value in opinions that are different from my own. 🔸I accept that my beliefs and attitudes may be wrong. 🔸 In the face of conflicting evidence, I am open to changing my opinions. 🔸 I like finding out new information that differs from what I already think is true. These questions come from the 'General Intellectual Humility Scale', developed by Mark Leary and Rick Hoyle. If you scored high, studies show that you: ✅ more carefully consider the evidence on which your beliefs are based. ❎ are aware that you might be wrong. 🤝 consider the perspectives of others, including those with different viewpoints. 🧠 revise your views when evidence exists to prove it. ℹ are inclined to learn new information. Interestingly, studies also show how greater intellectual humility results in better relationships and decision-making. ➡ So yes, accept that you don't know everything, question yourself and be curious. Next time you have a heated debate, think about it. You cannot change how others think, but you can focus on yourself.
