As Jake Miller of The Engineered Innovation Group explains in "Four Common Innovation Pitfalls — and How to Avoid Them," they recently completed an engagement for a large, publicly traded organization focused on AI use cases. "While our technical feasibility assessment and recommended next steps are immediately actionable and focused on the client's desired outcomes, the decision to move forward is now lost in committee. And has resulted in engaging even more stakeholders – many with opinions, few with accountability," writes Jake. Read his article, "Four Common Innovation Pitfalls — and How to Avoid Them," to get his insights on common pitfalls "great leaders and great organizations fall into on a regular basis." https://lnkd.in/es2swWnX

I've seen it proven over and over that new-venture building is crucial for driving sustainable growth in today’s unpredictable business environment. This trend is fast emerging as a top strategic move that we expect CEOs to make in 2025, not only sparking innovation but also enabling organizations to adapt effectively to changing market dynamics. The question is: what makes this approach such a resilient growth lever? My colleagues Belkis Vasquez-McCall, Daniel Aminetzah, Markus Berger-de León, and Paul Jenkins have dived into insights from over 1,100 business leaders and C-suite executives to help answer that question in our Leap survey on new venture-building. Naturally, new ventures like generative AI, subscription businesses, and expansions into new verticals are viewed as having the most potential value, but there's a lot more to unpack. "When the board and management partnership works well, sustainability and AI can be fully integrated into the business as levers for value creation. When the board and management struggle to reach alignment, sustainability and AI efforts risk becoming disjointed or unsuccessful bolt-ons to existing workflows, rather than tools for rethinking business and operating models." This is from an insightful article "The Board’s Role in AI and Sustainability " by Kurt Harrison, Laura Mantoura and Emily Meneer, Corporate and startup boards need to adjust to change, and fast! They need to bring on board people with experience and perspective of the different challenges, risks and opportunities in both AI and Sustainability. The biggest risk is that board of directors will do nothing and keep their existing board skills and people who will not be able to educate, integrate, oversee and ratify the risks and opportunities within AI and sustainability. Here are a real world example of how the questions I posed to boards and management teams: In one company, the management planned a 100% growth of the team and using a big portion of their funds to hire both execs and managers to accelerate data collection and insight and also support operations. Everyone on both the board and management team just went ahead with the costly plan, while I posed the question "could we use AI to reduce costs and complexity and risk of finding the right people and firing?" In another occasion, the management pushed to expand aggressively their physical assets, with no consideration of the impact of their company footprint, including commute of employees and equipment, heating, energy etc. Posing this question helped both board and management think and calculate the projected footprint of the plan and move to a leaner gradual plan based on both impact and cost milestones. Rethink your board structure, the people you bring and the perspective they could bring about AI and sustainability. William Akman, David A. Bell, Kerry Berchem, Daniel Burch, Paul L.
