Since childhood, postcards have helped me imagine and shape my future. This postcard is a watercolour painting of Allan Kellehear at the 6th Public Health Palliative Care International Conference, held in 2019 in Australia. Listening to Allan Kellehear, I noted, "Community is a background idea in palliative care, not a foreground issue. The field of palliative care defines its role in clinical terms of palliation, repair, and support, not as a public sector educator, community leader, or policy leader...challenge it." Today, in 2024, partnering with a student at our local university, I was invited to outline the services we provide at Juhi Courage Consulting: ❣ Leading change in end-of-life and aftercare ❣ Co-designed approaches ❣ Content knowledge and expertise ❣ Cultural advisory services ❣ Culturally responsive training and workshops ❣ Research and evaluation ❣ Engaged network and collaborators with access to proven approaches for addressing complex issues creatively and innovatively ❣ Advocacy Nothing about us, without us. #wecan #learning #collaborating #caringcommunities #possibilities #newopportunities #groundup

Thrilled to have been awarded an implementation grant from the UVM Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships to leverage cross-sector partnerships to advance health and educational equity across rural Vermont! Press release here: https://lnkd.in/d6benpDu Through this effort, four incredible rural health care/ school dyads across Vermont will be funded to implement school attendance screenings in primary care, and to build or enhance cross-sector teams to prevent and respond to missed school in the community. At the state level, we will engage state government and other partners to enhance policy and practice state-wide through trainings, resource curation, convenings and briefs. Chronic school absenteeism is a public health issue -- and can be seen as a pediatric vital sign, indicating an unmet health or social need. Leveraging health care as a partner to schools to address family barriers to regular attendance, and elevating the assets and strengths of rural communities in doing so, is CRITICAL to enhance child and family outcomes.

Tiffany Numa | How to Engage and Empower Your Community | Nola Collegiate Public Health Conference 2024📍 Tiffany is a recent graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, where she studied Public Health Sciences & Mathematics. This fall she will begin her Masters at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health! 👏🏽 ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ Centering community members in the process of identifying problems and developing solutions is crucial because it ensures that the interventions are relevant, effective, and truly address the community’s specific needs. Instead of making assumptions, asking community members about their challenges and how they can be assisted fosters a collaborative and inclusive approach. This method, known as Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), emphasizes the importance of researchers and community members working hand-in-hand to co-create solutions. By leveraging the lived experiences and insights of community members, CBPR leads to more sustainable and impactful outcomes that are embraced and supported by those directly affected. This approach not only empowers the community but also builds trust and accountability between researchers and participants, ensuring that the solutions developed are both meaningful and practical. #TiffanyNuma #CommunityEngagement #Empowerment #NolaCollegiatePHC #PublicHealthConference #CBPR #CommunityHealth #InclusiveResearch #SustainableSolutions #XULA #ColumbiaPublicHealth #PublicHealthSciences #HealthEquity #CommunityCollaboration #ResearchWithImpact #TrustAndAccountability

Just completed an Implementation Research course, created by the Dalla Lana School of Public Health in collaboration with Public Health Training for Equitable Systems Change (PHESC) and it's been enlightening. We delved into how IR brings theory into practice, bridging the gap between research and real-world impact. A significant aspect was the Theory of Change (ToC), which serves as a guiding light, ensuring clarity and stakeholder alignment throughout the research process. The course underscored the importance of equity-focused research, emphasizing the need to ensure fair access to healthcare resources for all. Additionally, we explored strategies for scaling up interventions, considering sustainability and equity implications. #learning #certification #research

THIS PART. "Despite a long-standing status quo in the field of health science research, the path to change is clear and achievable—if we have the collective will. We must: Welcome and train the next generation of equity-focused researchers Change academic institutions’ long-standing practices around career advancement, rigor and methodology, and community engagement Commit to—and invest in—sharing actionable evidence broadly, in new ways that reach more people who can use it to inform policy and practice change." #HealthEquityResearch #CommunityEngagement #Investment

Yesterday at University of Oxford, our panel of experts came together at the Health Services Research UK conference to explore themes around 'Equity and the Scale and Spread of Innovations within and beyond the Health and Care System'. Their interventions focused on three central themes: 1. Graham Martin (Director of Research at THIS Institute (The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute) University of Cambridge) and Natasha Curran (Medical Director at the Health Innovation Network South London) shared some thoughts on the type of innovations that have the potential to address health inequities. 2. Thara Raj (Director of Population Health & Inequalities at Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and Christopher Newdick (Professor Emerius of Health Law at University of Reading) reflected on the challenges of reconciling pressure on the system, the need to ration resources and innovations to reduce health inequities. 3. Jabeer Butt (Chief Executive at the Race Equality Foundation) and Chloe Gaye (Consultant in Public Health-Health Improvement and Communities at West Northamptonshire Council) shared insightful ideas on how we can centre community voices when thinking about health innovations. A very big thank you to all of our panelists, those in attendance and my co-covenor Dr Anita Mehay! This discussion will be published in the coming weeks (watch this space...). Also, if you are interested in these themes and would like to know more on the spread and scale of innovations, equity and inclusion, please do get in touch with the Health Equity and Inclusion Lab which I co-lead and sits within the City, University of London Centre for Health Care Innovation Research.
