What would you pick? The gain today, or the CHANCE for gains... ...in the future. A signed contract today for a mid-sized deal, no chance for growth? Or a smaller client added tomorrow with countless possibilities to expand? A nice donation today, but a likely one-timer? Or a small token gesture tomorrow that starts a lifetime donor journey? In my experience in corporate sales, most of our largest client accounts did not start out as our largest client accounts. I was more concerned with account potential than with today's return. The same is true in fundraising. Donor Lifetime Value is a much bigger indicator of sustained success than the initial donation amount. So what's it gonna be? A contract or ongoing growth? Our attitude about fundraising matters - and one way we can adjust our attitude is to reexamine and reframe how we approach the work. When you're given a donation - you become part of THEIR story too. And like all good stories it needs a beginning, middle and end. You're the middle bit. You and your donor are now in it together to create how the middle bit contributes to the end. The donor is looking to you to provide some of the details - but it's still their story. You're just helping them to add a chapter or two. We all know the saying “It takes a village”. I believe that this is true. I know that I have had a village surround me and support me through all of the phases of my life and career. I am so grateful for the people who encouraged me, told me the truth and encouraged me to persevere even when I didn’t want to. I have worked really hard, but it hasn’t been alone.
