PhD Scholarship Opportunity We are excited to announce a 2025 RTP scholarship to research the Herbert Mayer Collection of Carrolup artworks at the John Curtin Gallery. Discovering and sharing the stories of the Stolen Generations through the Carrolup artworks. LINK 🔗 https://lnkd.in/geRSmbWc Applications close: 20/08/2024 The Herbert Mayer Collection of Carrolup Artwork is a unique collection of artworks created by Aboriginal children of the Stolen Generations in the 1940s at the Carrolup Native Settlement in Western Australia. The purpose of this PhD project is to provide an evidence-based account of the development and consequent dispersal of the artworks. Many artworks are yet to be located, and the identity of many of the ‘once known’ children is still to be established. This project aims to uncover new artworks and to trace the histories of children after the Settlement closed. How can we reimagine PhDs in the arts and humanities? A thought-provoking perspective from the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council. One of the interesting set of questions is: “Can we do more to explore and explain portfolio PhDs, discontinuous experiences which can produce the equivalent of a PhD by publication but played out over projects? Or PhDs in policy and social innovation work, especially those co-created with communities?” https://lnkd.in/g-vm3XjS
We need a debate about PhDs in the arts and humanities. Now.

Now here are some really exciting PhD topics to get your ‘teeth stuck into’ if the Medieval period is your thing!? Not that it’s mine, by a long shot (I’m a generalist - have to be as a curator) but at present I’m very interested in Medieval Lapidaries and the magic and medicine of precious and semi precious gemstones, following some research which i had to undertake recently to successfully acquire a Medieval Seal Ring which was set with a Roman (2nd-1st Century BC carved intaglio). So medieval magic would be my choice! Which would you choose and why?
💡 Have you been thinking about studying for a PhD? You could be paid to do it. Following Dr. Hannah Bunting's lead, this post is to to alert you to a number of funding opportunities available for excellent candidates with exciting projects across the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences here at the University of Exeter. Deadlines in January and February 2025 for an October 2025 start. You can see the details of them here: https://lnkd.in/eN-eTSnG If you have an interest in any of the topics below, please get in touch. I'm particularly keen to supervise those who are underrepresented in academia and/or have non-traditional paths to academia. Even if I'm not the right person to supervise you, I can point you in the direction of my wonderful colleagues who can! ✨ the medieval supernatural ✨ medieval Arthurian legends and literatures ✨ medieval prophecy ✨ medieval magic ✨ medieval gender and sexuality ✨ medieval heresy and the evolution of the crime of witchcraft Also feel free to follow me here and/or on instagram @medievaljen for more insights into the sort of areas I work on. https://lnkd.in/gNkueckA

Yo any one here done a phd or in academia? I have my heart set on Goldsmiths for my doctorate but as it appears to be falling apart I'm considering other options too (The Courtauld, Edinburgh, Camberwell and SOAS are currently attractive options-I can't afford the Royal College sadly). My thesis is about the role that art has in memorialising and testifying to women's experience of sexual violence in war time (with an emphasis on colonised Eastern Asia). What are the most important things to consider do pple think when choosing an institution? Ie. teaching opportunities, scholarships, funding, research output, reputation etc. Any advice or suggestions appreciated as I have a month to decide. Cheers!!
