This year's International Women's Day theme, Inspire Inclusion, is one of my favorites. Let's celebrate our progress and achievements, thank those who have supported, advocated for and raised the bar for all of us AND let's use the opportunity to bring awareness to the challenges that still exist.
To me, Inspiring Inclusion isn’t just about who is "allowed" a seat at the table, it's about how we perceive them and treat them, as well. Take communication styles, for example. Studies repeatedly show that more so than men, a woman's tenor, volume, annunciation, and style … all send a non-verbal cue to others about our likability, credibility and ultimately our ability.
The good news is, as leaders, we can do something to address this. One very real example is goal setting — having clear and aligned expectations for every role. Your company, department and individual goals should be structured, anchored in outcomes, and measurable. Doing so can remove some of the subjectivity from performance reviews and ensure that we are truly assessing based on performance and not style.
Being aware of unconscious bias and taking thoughtful action is one way that I Inspire Inclusion.

10moOh my gosh. Thank you so much for the kind and generous words, Joanna Ehresman. If you've seen my latest posts ... you know I needed the lift. Thank you. I am trying to reach marketers because their content can go further if they make accessibility part of their work and it's easy!
