The calendar’s about to flip, and here’s the push: follow this tradition, act a certain way, reinvent ourselves by January 1st. It’s exhausting, and let’s be honest: there’s a ton of money to be made off people feeling “not enough.” But the truth is, no universal script exists. We’re shown these extremes—homes dripping in decorations and giant holiday gatherings, or silent nights of reflective solitude—as if they’re the only right ways to feel festive. But those are not actually rules we have to follow. We get to decide what actually means something to us and what doesn’t. The fitness and wellness industries waiting to capitalize on our insecurities after January 1st? They can look elsewhere. None of us owe anyone a grand reinvention or a perfectly meaningful toast. We owe ourselves the space to close out the year, or welcome the next one, on our own terms—without a sales pitch disguised as self-improvement. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
