AI is nipping at our heels and so is the legislation around it. I was excited to find this great resource from FAIRLY AI to keep up with legal requirements. One aspect I love about my role is that it encompasses a wide range of areas, from the people and culture side to the policy, systems and compliance side. Not only do I get to hire great people and make their employee experience a rewarding and productive one; I also make sure organizations are compliant and protected when it comes to legal changes that affect the workplace. Check out this map. All the green tags are laws that we must be either following or getting ready to follow soon. And there are so many more in the works... More than 12 states have passed laws covering AI use, with additional bills out there, around transparency in the development of AI, decision making for housing, employment and other "life events," and privacy/biases in the use of personal information. To tag onto MeBeBot's build vs. buy blog this week (see the link in the comments), it will be hard for companies to keep up with the changes. In case you're interested in California SB 1047, the bill is currently pending in the Assembly Appropriations Committee, with the next hearing on August 15, 2024. If and when passed by Appropriations, the full Assembly can vote on the bill. The bill passed the Senate 32-1, with 7 abstentions. Then, it would go to Governor Newsom for signature. When the CLA IP Section DC Delegation met with various agencies this spring, it was quite clear that there will need to be federal legislation on AI safety. The issues were still being studied, and given the complexity this is sensible. Unsurprisingly, it looks like, as with privacy, California will start out ahead. The preemption tension between the CCPA and comprehensive federal data privacy legislation (e.g., HR 8818) is more than palpable. Will the same issue/pushback arise with respect to federal AI safety legislation? #AI
