Tm:YAP Tm doped crystals embrace several attractive features that nominate them as the material of choice for solidstate laser sources with emission wavelength of around 2 microns. Yttrium aluminium perovskite YAlO 3 (YAP) is an attractive laser host for thulium due to its natural birefringence combined with good thermal and mechanical properties similar to those of YAG. There is a self-quenching mechanism between the 3H and 3F levels that produces two excitation 4 4 photons in the upper laser level for one absorbed pump photon. This makes the laser potentially very efficient with high quantum efficiency. The emission cross-section of thulium in YAP is twice as high as in YAG and the peak of absorption at 793 nm is suitable for InGaAs diode pumping. The 4 nm wide absorption peak of Tm:YAP is broader compared to Tm:YAG, resulting in better tolerance to pump diode wavelength variations. Tm:YAP can be tuned from 1870 nm up to 2030 nm with the maximum at 1985 nm. 🌟 Excited to share our latest paper, "Multiple absorption regimes in simple lithography-free structures leading to ultrathin slabs", published in Phys. Rev. B 110, 045408 on 8 July 2024. 📖 We study different absorption regimes in the mid-infrared in simple lithography-free configurations consisting of a grounded dielectric slab. Our research explores complex permittivity combinations that lead to absorption, ranging from near-zero to near-infinite values. This includes an analysis of angle and polarization dependencies using silicon carbide, revealing potential multiband absorption capabilities. We also identify conditions for perfect absorption in ultrathin slabs and unique modes at oblique incidence. This research offers valuable insights for developing perfect absorbers for infrared applications like thermal emission, communications, and sensing. 👏 A big thank you to the team Carlos Lezaun Capdevila, David Navajas Hernández, and Iñigo Liberal Olleta for the great work! Yb:LuAG is a very promising Yb-doped laser material. The optical and mechanical properties of LuAG are very similar to those of YAG crystals. Thanks to similar atomic weight and ionic size of doping Yb3+ ions and substituted Lu3+ lattice ions, the doping concentration has a low influence on lattice vibration modes of LuAG which allow obtaining highly doped Yb:LuAG laser crystal without significant influence on thermal conductivity of this material.
