Every member of Team Jeni’s, from part-time ice cream Ambassador through CEO, is eligible for a 4-week paid sabbatical every three years. The purpose of sabbatical is to rest, restore, and get inspired. In 2023, 58 team members spent their sabbatical doing things like traveling the world, spending time with people they love, or learning new hobbies. Years ago, one of our team members spent the entire month playing his guitar, leaving his house only for groceries. He reported afterward that the month was every bit as delightful and restorative as he’d dreamed it could be. Bottom line: there is no wrong way to sabbatical…except to check work email or check in with one’s boss; those activities are not allowed while on sabbatical at Jeni’s. “How-did-you-spend-your-sabbatical” stories are as unique as each of our team members, and we love hearing them upon each person’s return. Here is our Area Manager, Hilary Glass’s recent sabbatical story: “I started sabbatical with a bang, wasting no time! I hopped on a plane and flew over 20 hours to Delhi, India. This was my first time in India, which was made extra special because I was meeting my husband's family for the first time. (We had eloped in 2021 during the pandemic.) After a 5-hour car ride along a highway of sugar cane, cows, and dhabas, we arrived in Dehradun, a city nestled in the valleys near the Himalayan foothills. It was magical! I became part of the family and got to experience day-to-day life in India. From making chapatis and parathas in the kitchen with lots of laughter, to running errands throughout the week, we prepared for Akash’s and my reception. We went to markets, picked out my lehenga, rode around the town on an auto, checking out all the cute cafes, and the beauty Dehradun had to offer. We even journeyed up the mountains to a hill station called Mussoorie along the winding roads dotted with picturesque stops for chai, maggie, and momos. On our way back to the U.S., we had 20 hours in Dubai, and made sure to visit the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa. The views of Dubai were incredible as we caught the city right at sunset! Back home, I spent my last week and a half with friends, going to shows, and resting. Overall, the sabbatical was an amazing time. Some of it was planned, and other times I had no agenda, which was just as special. Being able to take this time to rest, recharge and fill up my cup again was invaluable.”
