However, we as Supervisor/ Manager, can definitely make a difference by 1- Selecting the right people for the job. 2- Giving the required training before asking them to do the job. 3- Supervising/ handholding at the key moments. 4- Communicating clearly. Injured person must pay more attention in the future 🤦♂️ If I had a quid for every time I saw that in an investigation report I'd be a very rich man. Is that going to prevent a reoccurrence? No. Then why bother? We ask this question during our safety leadership workshop when we're discussing the importance of learning. And to be fair most answer honestly...it closes the accident investigation process and they can get back to the day job. This is one of the most impactful parts of the workshop...one of the penny drops or AHA moments. For a number of reasons but mainly because there is a realisation that it's not helping anyone and it certainly won't save any time in the long run. Being Safety professional doesn't mean employees should be afraid of you. No, you should be their role model. Someone they can speak to. Be a team coach. When on site while looking for unsafe acts and conditions consider even coaching and mentoring. Compliments them if they are doing right. Advise and correct them if you see something that is not right. Be a good leader and you will see changes on site. The behavior and culture will change.
