Top 5 Leadership Lessons I’ve Learned as a CEO Leading a business through decades of growth, setbacks, and innovation has shaped my journey as a CEO. From launching RMPro to experiencing the highs of digital transformation and the lows of personal and professional setbacks, here are the top five leadership lessons I’ve learned: 1. Resilience is Key Leadership isn’t about avoiding challenges—it’s about embracing them. In 2021, I faced significant personal and financial losses, but it was those tough times that allowed me to emerge stronger in 2023. Resilience has been my most valuable trait, whether overcoming market crashes or personal setbacks. 2. Scalability Starts with Systems From the early days of launching Techstyle and RMPro, I learned that growth is only sustainable if you build the right systems. My first rug store crossed $1 million in sales within the first year, and this was only possible because I created processes that could be scaled across multiple stores. 3. Embrace Innovation, but Stay Grounded In 1999, we launched one of the first digital TV studios netcasting online. That vision pushed us forward, but we also faced the burst of the dot-com bubble in 2000. The key was not abandoning innovation but learning how to balance vision with sustainable, real-world practices. 4. The 3 Rs of Leadership: Read, Relate, Write Every day, I read to gain knowledge, relate with others to grow networks, and write to reflect on my journey. These daily practices have kept me grounded and open to continuous improvement, a principle I emphasize in my book “Where are the Customers?” 5. Partnerships Are Crucial—But Choose Wisely In 2021, I faced a severe partnership failure, which ultimately led to homelessness. But that taught me the importance of aligning with the right partners—those who share your values and long-term vision. Now, in Washington D.C., I’ve built partnerships that focus on long-term scalability and genuine growth. In leadership, challenges will come, but each failure provides a new lens for growth. As we have entered 2025, there’s a lot to change and adapt for us. When we talk about business, it's important to emphasize on how entrepreneurial health is working. Running a business can be all-consuming, but neglecting your entrepreneurial health is a mistake. To build a company that thrives beyond your leadership, regular checkups are essential. Each year, I focus on three key assessments: 1️. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸– Ensuring a strong, aligned team. 2️. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 – Staying balanced and purpose-driven. 3️. 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 – Building lasting business value. These annual reviews guide my short- and long-term planning, setting the foundation for personal, financial, and business success. Go beyond numbers—each leader should present how their department will achieve them. 3️.𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺: Map out goals and strategies for the year ahead. Highlight themes like tech upgrades, partnerships, or operational tweaks. If an exit is on the horizon, strategize ways to maintain or boost value. This process energizes me every year. As a small business owner, I've discovered that leadership isn't just about making decisions from a position of authority; it's about rolling up your sleeves and navigating through the unpredictable waters of entrepreneurship alongside your team. It's about facing challenges head-on, whether it's grappling with cash flow issues, adapting to rapidly changing market trends, or managing unexpected crises. Hitting the ceiling. When you’re in growth mode (where we all want to be), it’s going to happen. You know that feeling. You’re using your tried and true tools and techniques, but it’s just not working anymore. It’s that concept of “what got you here, won’t get you there.” In talking with a fellow business owner last week, she was struggling with “needing to do something different” to get to where she wanted to be. Interestingly enough, the business was doing pretty well by most indicators - strong sales, staffed with good team members, successful new locations. The issue? She was still managing so much of the day-to-day business, easily logging 60 hours a week and rationalizing that it was temporary while her company was scaling. Spoiler alert - growing businesses are almost always in “scaling mode”. There’s no temporary about it. One EOS worldwide tool that has helped entrepreneurial leadership teams break through that ceiling is “Delegate and Elevate”. As an EOS implementer, I get to work with leadership teams — teaching them use this 4-quadrant practice to really focus on the things they love doing and they’re great at. The rest of if? Thinking Thursdays: The 11th Navy Leadership Principle – Employ Your Unit in Accordance with its Capabilities "Are they capable, or do you just wish they were?" Effective leaders must avoid self-delusion when evaluating their team's capabilities. Did you build your staff when your start-up was small, and everyone wore multiple hats just to get the product out the door? As the competition evolves, has your team grown with it, or do you find yourself wishing for more? What talent do you wish you and others had, and what’s holding you back from acquiring it? If you created this business, you can conjure the talent you need. Either support your current team in developing new skills, or head into the recruitment trenches. I’ve seen countless entrepreneurs use creativity to solve problems. Take John: he needed his restaurant’s floors refinished. Instead of paying cash, he bartered meals with a local craftsman. Or Dotty, who traded dance lessons for renovation work at her studio. These creative solutions worked for the short term. But what happens when the daily operation demands more – automation, new systems, or specialized skills to lead your business into its next phase? Who among your team has the transferable skills to take you to the next level, and who doesn't? You must ask: "Has the relationship completed itself?" This isn't about loyalty or breaking promises. It's about mutual growth. If you're avoiding tough decisions to "keep the peace," the real cost may be stagnation – while your competition moves ahead. As a leader, are you confronting these realities head-on, or are you watching your dream take on water? Assess your team’s capabilities with a clear eye. Is your business outgrowing them? That may be a sign of your success – but it also means it's time to evolve.
