🪵 Russia’s Timber Grab: Oligarchs Take Axe to Old-Growth Forests 🇷🇺 The exploitation of Russia's ancient forests continues unabated, with the Segezha Group, controlled by billionaire Yevtushenkov, engaging in large-scale deforestation. This timber is often traded to China and India, feeding into the global forest products supply chain. 🔎 Key Highlights: 1️⃣ Ongoing Deforestation: Despite claims of reforestation, investigative reports reveal that rare old-growth forests in Karelia are being systematically cut down. The Segezha Group has opted out of protections that previously safeguarded millions of hectares of ecologically rich forests, leading to significant environmental concerns. 2️⃣ Economic Pressures: Following sanctions imposed on Russian timber products by the EU after the invasion of Ukraine, the Segezha Group has prioritised short-term financial gains over sustainable practices. By withdrawing from the logging moratorium, they have opened up vast protected forest areas for exploitation, which has sparked outrage among environmentalists. 3️⃣ Long-Term Consequences: Experts warn that the rollback of protections compromises the future of Russia's timber industry. As the sector tarnishes its reputation, accessing ecologically sensitive markets may become increasingly unlikely, with decisions driven by immediate economic benefits rather than long-term sustainability. 🗣️ #questionforgroup: How can the global community influence sustainable practices in timber industries, particularly in regions where economic pressures lead to environmental degradation? What role can certification bodies play in promoting responsible forestry practices? 🔗 To delve deeper into the implications of this timber grab and its impact on global markets, click here: https://lnkd.in/gZNjmkeT #timber #wood #sustainability #deforestation #environment #russia #segezhagroup #segezha #climate #climatechange #stewardship #fsc #trade #conflicttimber #ukrainewar

Indigenous Peoples have sustained and cared for the local forestry in Essequibo, Guyana, for generations. The Guyanese government, however, is trading local forests for global carbon credit offsets and gold mine concessions, wrote Indigenous leader Mario Hastings of the Kako Village, in a piece for Climate Home News. "We have complained that the carbon credit scheme fails to provide an adequate process for validating the carbon, and it does not define who has rights to profit off of the carbon. The scheme’s standards do not adhere to ART’s environment and social safeguards. And our communities’ right to free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) has been repeatedly ignored," he wrote. In an effort to draw the eyes of the world to the situation of Indigenous Peoples in Guyana who are threatened by the country's carbon market. "Typical of places with a wealth of natural resources that have yet to be exploited, Essequibo is rarely in the lens of global media coverage. Outside interests operate with less restraint when they feel that no one is watching. And so, with the carbon credit markets, Indigenous rights are rarely respected, and no one notices," Hastings wrote. "If we want to stave off the worst of climate change, however, we need tropical forests to remain upright and to do that, governments need to respect Indigenous rights over our lands and the biodiversity, forests and carbon that we protect." https://lnkd.in/g3tW_epv

🇺🇦 Reforestation in Ukraine: German Know How to Fuel "Green Country" Agenda 🌍 Ukraine is teaming up with German forestry experts to revive and expand its war-torn forests, aligning with President Zelensky's vision for a sustainable and resilient "Green Country." 🔎 Here’s what you need to know: 1️⃣ Strategic Recovery: Ukraine's Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Ministry is set to publish a comprehensive three-year forest recovery plan in June. This initiative includes new forest inventories, demining activities, and the cultivation and restoration of up to 10,000 hectares already replanted this year. 2️⃣ International Collaboration: German experts are assisting Ukraine in integrating advanced forest management practices, accounting, monitoring, and digitalisation strategies. This partnership underscores the strategic importance of forestry in Ukraine's recovery and future economic stability. 3️⃣ Sustainable Certifications: The goal is to boost exports of FSC and PEFC-certified timber, mainly from western regions less affected by conflict. This is part of broader efforts to enhance timber processing capabilities and increase the competitiveness of Ukrainian timber in global markets. 📸 Ukrainian forests, heavily impacted by ongoing conflict, are getting a much-needed intervention to restore their ecological and economic value. 🌪️ World’s Largest Man-Made Forest: A Green Shield Against Sandstorms 🇨🇳 The Saihanba National Forest Park in China stands as a testament to the power of reforestation. It covers over 200 square kilometres and has reduced sandstorms affecting Beijing and surrounding northern cities by an incredible 80%! 🔎 Key Highlights: 1️⃣ Remarkable Restoration: For over 60 years, three generations of Chinese foresters have worked diligently to reverse 400 years of rapid deforestation. Established in the early 1960s, the Saihanba Mechanical Forest Farm has transformed a barren desert into a lush forest ecosystem, now boasting over 80% forest cover. 2️⃣ Environmental Impact: This man-made forest is home to nearly half a billion trees, absorbing 745,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually while releasing 545,000 tonnes of oxygen. Its presence has significantly mitigated dust storms, protecting urban areas from environmental degradation. 3️⃣ Global Leadership: As the world’s leading nation in reforestation, China is committed to expanding its forest cover through innovative policies and international collaboration. The country’s investment in environmental initiatives positions it as a key player in global afforestation efforts, driving positive change in Central and East Asia. 🗣️ #questionforgroup: How can other nations learn from China’s reforestation successes to combat climate change and environmental degradation? What strategies should be prioritised for effective forest restoration globally? 🌳 The transformation of Saihanba into the world’s largest man-made forest showcases the potential of collaborative efforts to restore our planet’s green cover and protect urban areas from the impacts of climate change. 🔗 To learn more: https://lnkd.in/gcd2Vkj4 #reforestation #sustainability #environment #climatechange #afforestation #China #greeninitiatives #urbanforestry #Saihanba #biodiversity #carboncapture #environmentalpolicy #GreatGreenWall
