Do you want to raise capital or sell? When talking to founders, I’ve noticed that often founders are split evenly between raising capital or selling. What I hear is: I’d be willing to raise growth capital and take the business to the next level OR I’d also be willing to sell the business and take the money and walk away from the business clean or shift roles to help the acquirer grow the business. In my recent interview with serial acquirer Kevin McArdle from Big Band Software, he talks about how if you’re a founder, take the time to reflect on your exit plan. He’s developed a process called the annual exit planning process that helps founders get clear on their exit plan because if you’re stuck between raising capital or selling, you’re likely doing yourself a disservice and confusing the people you’re looking to raise from or sell to. As a business owner, you plan every aspect of your business. But have you planned for what will happen when you retire? Business attorney Trey Hendershot speaks with wealth advisors John Carolyn and Mark Lopez about the pitfalls of succession planning. Take a listen:
What do business owners need to know about exit planning? Managing shareholder Trey Hendershot discusses business succession planning — including when to sell, how to identify buyers, and common pitfalls — with John Carolyn and Mark Lopez on the latest episode of UBS Mainstreet Wealth Management's "Dollars & Sense" podcast. "One pitfall of exit planning is that business owners undervalue or don't know the value of their business. They don't start planning the exit strategy soon enough and walk away unhappy with the sale. "The buyer will set the price as low as possible, so don't want to rely on their numbers. Instead, get a valuation of your business done so you know its fair market value and can structure the deal to realize that value."
