He and many other young growers are balancing on a knife's edge because of escalating labor costs -- a problem created by the federal Department of Labor in the Administrations of both parties. If this isn't fixed pronto, consumers will no longer have the option to purchase Michigan asparagus or many other Michigan grown fruits and vegetables. The down stream affects on our rural communities will be significant impacting workers in fresh packing facilities, processing facilities, ag input suppliers and other service businesses as well as on schools and local government services.
