Since 2004… We Cambridgeshire Community Foundation have awarded over £32 million through 10,000+ grants. We have supported thousands of organisations, including charities, community groups, schools and sports clubs. They have made a positive difference to hundreds of thousands of people. We have funded projects in every ward in Cambridgeshire. You can learn more about our impact in a new 20-year impact report and most importantly see some of the work of the incredible charities and community groups that make all the difference, especially for those facing the biggest challenges and disadvantage. Whilst I am proud to reflect on what has been achieved, our new Vital Signs report shows that there is still much, very much more to be done. For a brilliantly successful County like Cambridgeshire we can see that the gap between the wealthier and the more deprived districts has widened in the last decade. In our cities, there are stark inequalities relating to income, education, and health between the most and least deprived wards. In Cambridge, there is a 12 year difference in life expectancy between the most and least deprived people! In a County, world-renowned for education, we are below the national average in indicators of early years development and school engagement. Poor outcomes for children eligible for free school meals reflect the impact of deprivation on education and sadly, later life prospects. The UK feels really heavy right now and it's hard to know how you can help when you work in advertising, essentially encouraging people to buy more stuff. But I encourage my network to take a minute, check in on your colleagues and then get down to business, ensuring that you are investing your ad budgets intentionally and meaningfully. First things first, drive revenue to publications that give voice to communities being affected by the carnage, secondly ensure that the media you are buying delivers on your brand's core values and ensure your brand is showing up in an authentic and well judged way. Many organisations claim to represent us, but in many cases, they are not led by people from our communities. As a result, our voices aren’t heard, and the policies and services receiving funding to support us often miss the mark. We call on government officials, charity leaders, funders, educational institutions, local councils, and civil services to prioritise authentic representation and leadership within Romany Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities. By supporting grassroots-led initiatives, creating inclusive policies, and providing targeted development programmes, these decision-makers can help ensure that our communities have a real voice in the decisions that affect our lives. Last week, I had the opportunity to represent Centre for Social Enterprise | Memorial University in the regional conversation led by Imagine Canada and Community Sector Council NL. It was a great and sincere conversation around the opportunities and challenges of the community sectors in Newfoundland and Labrador. Some of the discussions include - 1) The sustainability of government funding: The government needs a long-term strategy in supporting the community sector. Project-based funding can lack sustainability and create uncertainty in Social Purpose Organizations (SPOs). 2) Volunteer burnout symptoms: The community leaders generally agreed the observation of volunteer burnout. Newcomers can be a new hope for both volunteering and donation. 3) The increasing complexity of community needs: The community needs are becoming more and more complex. It takes collective effort to provide a strong support system, leveraging the expertise of each organization to maximize the power of the community sector. Looking forward to seeing Imagine Canada translate the regional conversation to the national policy advocacy!

Yesterday marked the end of #RefugeeWeek. But as we return to our daily routines on Linkedin, let's remember that our commitment to supporting refugees should extend beyond just one week each year. At Indigo Volunteers, we believe in the power of ongoing solidarity. The challenges faced by refugees don't vanish after a week of awareness. Their journey to rebuild their lives demands consistent support, understanding, and compassion. It’s inspiring to witness the incredible work our partners do to support refugees and to be part of the change that makes this possible. So before we get caught up in meetings, schedules, and commutes, let's take a moment to pledge our continued support for refugees. Where my ribbon skirt art meets activism through the dialogue the art facilitates. The ribbon skirts I created for this raffle are explicit acts of resistance and solidarity. For me, this can be highlighted by the scenario of asking someone to not wear a ribbon skirt, which is unethical and would hopefully make the enforcer uncomfortable in their actions. National Ribbon Skirt day was actually established in what is currently Canada in response to this. Assented in 2022, the act’s preamble reads in part: 👗“Whereas the ribbon skirt represents a direct connection to Mother Earth and its sacred medicines; 👗“Whereas Indigenous culture, tradition and ceremony, including Indigenous ties to language and the land, are critical to the vitality and well-being of Canada’s First Peoples;” 👗“Whereas section 1 of Article 15 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, to which Canada is a signatory, states, “Indigenous peoples have the right to the dignity and diversity of their cultures, traditions, histories and aspirations which shall be appropriately reflected in education and public information”; My right to wear a ribbon skirt is increasingly being recognized and protected in what is currently Canada; however, Palestinans and allies are being attacked for and denied their Indigenous clothing or regalia, resulting in lost employment and accolades; psychological, spiritual, and emotional harm; and even death. Creating a ribbon skirt that honours our interconnectedness with Palestinians is a way to navigate the hypocrisy I’m witnessing.
