This particular article is architecture-specific... but an awareness of the semiotics of a given space - and how everything from lighting and layout to signage can impact user experience for neurodivergent *and* neurotypical people - is imperative in all areas of spatial design
The emerging field of neuroarchitecture raises important new ethical questions for architects, write Cleo Valentine and Heather Mitcheltree.

The Dallas Morning News has sparked conversion with architecture critic Mark Lamster's new article, "How to make Dallas architecture less boring." Lamster describes the city's underwhelming architectural culture and offers an explanation: we have no notable collegiate architecture program. "For Dallas to significantly shift the quality of its built environment," he says, "if it wants to be more livable, equitable and economically stable, not to mention less boring — it needs to have the institutions that shape its environment within city limits." The thought-provoking article is not all critique, as Lamster gestures to many exceptional local firms. We were proud to see that his hyperlinked example is the 2023 profile of our Design Director, Ron Stelmarski, FAIA, "How one architect is remaking Dallas in his own modern image, one skyscraper at a time." We may be biased, but it's worth a read. And what if Dallas could cultivate a generation of Stelmarskis? What do you think? How can we foster a bolder, more innovative design culture in Dallas?

I completely agree with the point on design reflecting our shared values. However, it's crucial to also address a gap in many buildings—lack of wheelchair accessibility. Inaccessible spaces create barriers that restrict freedom and equality. Every design choice should include features that accommodate all abilities, ensuring that dignity is not just a concept but a lived experience for everyone. True inclusivity means no one should be left behind—whether it's through ramps, elevators, or wider doors, these features shouldn't be optional but essential.

Hi everyone, I’m thrilled to connect with you all and share my passion for architecture and design. I believe architecture is not just about buildings—it's about creating spaces that resonate with people and their emotions. I’m sharing an article I recently wrote for my college magazine: "Architecture of Solitude: Designing for the Introverts." It explores how thoughtful design can support well-being, balance, and inclusivity.

The New Wave of Urban Design Urban design is evolving to address modern challenges with a focus on resilience, inclusivity, sustainability, and technology. This transformation is reshaping our cities and how we live in them. Modern urban design must be resilient and adaptable to climate change and unexpected events. The Grand Egyptian Museum exemplifies this by integrating resilient design principles to preserve cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary needs, showcasing a vital trend as cities face environmental challenges. Creating spaces that foster social cohesion and cultural exchange is another key aspect. The Beijing City Library by Snøhetta is a prime example, providing a public space that encourages learning and community engagement. This promotes inclusivity and a sense of belonging, illustrating the importance of designing accessible urban environments. Sustainability is at the forefront of urban design, with projects like the Sun Rock Project by MVRDV in Taiwan leading the way. By harnessing renewable energy and using sustainable materials, these projects minimize environmental impact and ensure cities can grow without depleting resources. Advanced technologies are also transforming urban design. The Beijing City Library incorporates digital resources and interactive installations, blending traditional and modern knowledge to make public spaces more dynamic and engaging. This integration ensures that urban spaces remain functional and relevant in the digital age. As an architect with a master’s degree in visual culture, I find this new wave of urban design inspiring. Combining resilience, inclusivity, sustainability, and technology in contemporary projects enhances urban living by addressing current challenges and improving the quality of life. The future of urban design lies in creating adaptable, inclusive, and sustainable spaces. Embracing these principles will help build cities resilient to future challenges and vibrant for all residents.
