Today I celebrated the submission of my manuscript to Hurst Publishers and editor Ben Noble at UCL SSEES with my favourite happy meal (see below). It’s been a year since I started a sabbatical supported by Control Risks, and the time has, not surprisingly, flown by. This is largely because I found the process of researching, interviewing and writing for the book to be enormously enjoyable. I’ve tried diligently to tell the experience of the international business community inside (and now outside) Russia over the past thirty years; the voices in the book from people who lived there for all those years or even for a part of them bring the story vividly to life. The work continues: feedback from Hurst and Ben will be forthcoming shortly, and I’ve already had invitations from gracious supporters willing to host book launch events all around the world. In the meantime, a few observations: Working to one deadline for an entire year was a new experience. It was, in the end, nice to have only one deadline to worry about, even if it hovered for a long time. Book world and consulting world are quite different; both are full of generous, creative and supportive people. If you ask nicely, people are incredibly helpful. Even more helpful than you expected. Everyone likes to reminisce and tell a good story. Writing a book involves A LOT of sitting. Also, I almost had to buy a lock for my refrigerator. I will never, ever, not ever be that person who has massive bursts of creative energy and writes like a storm at, say, 6 a.m. In a previous life, I must have been a vampire. I can work without stopping once it’s dark. Finally, the writing went at a good, deliberate and measured pace. My own editing and revising went more slowly than I anticipated. I was greatly assisted by friends and colleagues who saw an early version of the manuscript. I owe them all a huge debt of thanks. And now, before the money shot below, here's the link to pre-order on Amazon. https://amzn.eu/d/dKvFEu7

Looking forward to the publication of “European Union Governance in Central Asia: A Structural Approach” edited by our colleagues Agha Bayramov and Marek Neuman. My chapter in the volume aims to articulate the role of the EU in Central Asia as partner in region building. Many thanks to editors for their efforts to make this volume possible. https://lnkd.in/dBVqmXz9

Anyone who has worked in the peer review system knows that things are in a state of flux right now. It is a system that has seen a heavy, almost overwhelming, burden on mostly volunteer reviewers. Resulting in a lot of unpaid work, with manuscript submissions not slowing, the #reviewerfatigue crisis continues to evolve. So, what can #publishers and journal societies do to reverse these trends? Well, there are no easy solutions, but we do have a few suggestions to incentivize #peerreview and reverse the peer review crisis in our newest blog at: https://loom.ly/E2C1Owk!
