Since the introduction of the Industrial Revolution, the world has entered another unannounced race to ace new technologies. This time, it's the competition of who can leverage the best of Artificial Intelligence tech. However, with great innovation comes greater responsibility, in this case, to use AI in the most prudent way possible. Keeping this in mind, India recently announced its IndiaAI Mission. The primary goal of this division of Digital India Corporation, under the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), is to develop a holistic ecosystem catering to the requirements of AI innovation and ensuring safe and ethical usage of the same. Mission components of IndiaAI: - To enhance India’s computing capacity with 10,000+ GPUs in a public-private partnership model. - Develop an AI marketplace to offer as a service and pre-trained models to AI-forward companies and AI enthusiasts.  - An Innovation Center to develop and use its Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) in domain-specific requirements. - Future skills promotion and startup financing in AI on different levels.  - Create dedicated frameworks and ethical regulations to ensure the safe and secure use of AI in all sectors Under the IndiaAI mission, 8 projects have been selected, ranging from individual data protection and reducing bias in AI systems to developing ethical AI usage guidelines and using AI in governance practices and more. At the #Nvidia AI Summit in #Mumbai, Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at MeitY and CEO of #IndiaAI, presented a transformative roadmap for the IndiaAI Mission, centered on making "AI in India, for India." His vision includes a seven-pillar framework to establish India as a leader in responsible AI, with priorities on infrastructure, data accessibility, AI skills, and safety. Being held a few days prior to the AI Summit in Seoul, it may be good if the CII Annual Business Summit 2024 on May 17-18 sees more focused deliberations on how to increase AI-related safety in India, which, as of now, does not have a specific AI-related regulatory/governance framework and, also, no AI Safety Institute on the lines of those present in the UK and the US. While there can be no question about how AI can potentially prove a gamechanger in India also, it is equally true that the tech, used irresponsibly, poses huge risks that are not restricted to its capability to "manipulate content or generate deceptive content", as the Bletchley Declaration of November 2023 had pointed out. Being the world's most populous nation and home to almost 18 percent of the global population, India potentially provides the best test case to determine whether and to what extent AI can be a force for good for all.
