The best financial aid models offer packages that effectively predict likely applicant reactions to their package. And most important, a financial aid model puts a brake on mindless efforts to throw money at applicants with the precision of darts tossed at a dartboard by amateurs. A good financial aid model relates strategy to outcomes linking admissions and financial aid into a coherent enrollment plan…This requires the careful design of academic programs and some skill at marketing them, using both inputs and outcomes, like placement at graduation…The best safeguard for enrollment officials across the country is to concentrate more on the science than the art of enrollment, working with the CFO to determine how best to build a profile using admission blocks that assure not only stability in each admission cycle but also some success at moving the needle to meet broader institutional goals…The solution must begin by finding a workable, predictive financial aid model that recognizes that the expense side of enrollment must be managed carefully.”
