America the Beautiful set an ambitious national goal to protect, conserve or restore at least 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by 2030. This would help safeguard our planet, protect wildlife and benefit communities. But to ensure we’re on track to meet this goal we need accurate, current data that highlights the range of locally-led, state and federal conservation and restoration efforts happening across the country. The American Conservation and Stewardship Atlas, released today by the Biden Administration, is an important step towards measuring our progress toward achieving these ambitious conservation goals. Along with the launch of https://lnkd.in/gJ_7NCtp, this tool allows you to explore the projects fueling conservation and climate action right now. It also includes a preliminary framework for tracking the progress and updates toward reaching the America the Beautiful goal. We’re excited to see how this tool informs and inspires individuals, policymakers and communities to continue protecting our lands, waters and wildlife. The White House

On the banks of the Juruá River, river turtles (locally known as quelonios) hatch from their nests.🐢 Quelonios are vital to the health of the Amazonian floodplain ecosystem. Local communities and fishing organizations are partnering with #NatGeoExplorers Andressa Scabin and João Campos-Silva to strengthen and expand a model of community-based conservation. Their scientific data will form the basis of a regional conservation plan, mapping parameters for establishing habitat protections to preserve wildlife and the food security of local communities. This conservation model forms part of the National Geographic and ROLEX #PerpetualPlanet Amazon Expedition—a multi-year science and storytelling exploration of the Amazon River Basin, from the Andes to the Atlantic, to further our understanding of this intricate freshwater ecosystem and advance solutions to ensure its protection. https://lnkd.in/dVQezcra

Did you know National Wildlife Week was created to honour Jack Miner, who was credited with saving the Canada goose from the brink of extinction? Wildlife conservation has continued since then, but there is still a lot of work to do. Over the last 25 years, the number of new species at risk has risen by an average of 4% per year. Our report on discretionary powers to protect species at risk found that Environment and Climate Change Canada was not proactive in prompting action to protect species under urgent threat.
