It was frustrating to spend my hard-earned pocket money on something I wanted, only to see it break easily, especially when it wasn't designed with user experience in mind. It felt like I had to adapt to the product rather than it serving me—if you know what I mean! When I went to design school, I had a lightbulb moment: products should be designed to serve the user, not the other way around. That realization became my mission—to design products that genuinely enhance the user's experience. That's what inspired this series, "Unveiling Standing Desk Woes." During a project last year, we discovered that many people, whether they bought a cheap or expensive standing desk, were stuck with poorly designed products that didn't add value to their lives. Users were settling for mediocrity. Back to school is always a mix of fun and nerves, especially when it involves transitions like moving away to college. As an international student, I vividly recall the challenge of packing only TWO suitcases for the journey. Even within the States, the rollercoaster ride of emotions was similar when we drove from Chicago to Ithaca for grad school with our two-door Honda Accord coupe packed to the max! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲? I’ll start by putting mine in the comments! Packing for transitions in this article resonated with me in two ways - (1) showing the evolution of items over time from 8-track tapes to CDs AND (2) when colleges ask the supplemental question of what we would bring to help our freshman roommate understand us better. It's an intriguing thought. While I’ve been told by Admissions Officers that there isn’t a right answer, they agreed there are wrong answers! To be memorable, they advised us to take the time to be specific and personal. No surprise that generic answers get lost in the pile. Enjoy the article. It's a fascinating read. Why I Love My Job! I recently had a conversation with a decision-maker at a local school district about designing exceptional learning environments. We focused on the costs associated with these improvements. As learning environments rapidly evolve, we debated the value of investing in higher quality and lifetime warranties. Drawing from her past experiences, she immediately questioned the risk of choosing low-cost furniture with minimal or no warranty. She was actually advocating for quality over price, a point I intended to make. She understood that prioritizing quality and longevity in purchases not only enhances the learning environment but also results in long-term savings for the district. It became evident that high-quality furniture was crucial in her decision-making process. She emphasized that this approach not only improves the overall learning environment but also reduces potential liabilities for the district.
