The Umayyad Mosque is considered the fourth most famous Islamic mosque, following the Sacred Mosques in Mecca and Medina and Al-Aqsa Mosque. It is also regarded as one of the most magnificent Islamic mosques and one of the Seven Wonders of Islam. Construction of the Umayyad Mosque began in 705 AD under the direction of The sixth caliph of the Umayyad dynasty Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik.  Craftsmen from Persia and India were brought in, and the Byzantine Emperor sent 100 Greek artists to contribute to its decoration.
