With thanks to the Telecoms.Com team for mentioning me on their latest podcast around the slowdown in data consumption and how this impacts manufacturer revenues. https://lnkd.in/eV7b4vz3 And for completeness, here's the text from "The 5G Myth" from 2016 that was mentioned [Starts] While voice grew steadily, data demand exploded, growing around 100-fold in the five years from 2007 to 2011. It has continued to grow rapid since. [...] Another point to note is that growth is slowing. Data growth is predicted to fall to 37% a year by 2020 and if the trend continues to zero by around 2027. This shows a classic “S-curve”, as experienced frequently with many new services and devices. If this were to occur, data would plateau at around 10x today’s levels, or around 15-20Gbytes/user/month. Such a plateau might be expected. There is only so much data that a mobile subscriber can consume. Once they are watching video for all their free moments while downloading updates and attachments there is little more that they could usefully download. At the level of the plateau shown here the average mobile user would be consuming over an hour of video via cellular on their mobile device every day. (Note that there may also be video streaming to the mobile device via Wi-Fi, and video streaming to other devices such as tablets also likely via Wi-Fi so this represents video mostly consumed on the move.) Of course, some users will exceed this, but equally many will consume much less or will download in advance. Personal data usage must plateau at some point. [ends]

Have you noticed that every conversation about the broadband industry revolves around the speeds and meeting "minimum" threshold levels? Even though that's a worthwhile discussion, I want to draw your attention to the business implications of what we're witnessing: The emergence of Multi-Gig services. AT&T has been advertising the "gigillionaires" among us with their 2 Gbps or 5 Gbps offers. In addition, Windstream offers 2 Gbps service, Frontier's site quickly discusses 5 Gbps capabilities and even C-Spire Fiber is advertising 8 Gbps! Are these high speeds in demand or even profitable for ISPs? The real question here is what the higher speeds mean to users opting for such offers and how much revenue the provider receives for these packages. In tomorrow's edition of the 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙏𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢 𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙧, I'll share information that illustrates how people consume data and what the competition for higher speeds means for the sustainability of the network business. Could that leave us on the brink of another telco bubble? Subscribe to the LinkedIn newsletter at the link below to be the first to receive weekly high-quality content to help you tackle complex strategic challenges in the telecom industry. Worldwide spending on telecommunications and pay TV services will reach $1,544 billion in 2024, representing an increase of 2.4% year-on-year, according to the Worldwide Semiannual Telecom Services Tracker published by International Data Corporation (IDC). The latest prediction is 1.0 percentage points higher than the version published in the May edition of IDC’s Tracker. If that forecast becomes reality, the above-mentioned annual growth rate would be the highest recorded in the last twelve years. https://lnkd.in/eJGJPHUi

The need for ever increasing fixed broadband bitrates appears to be levelling off on a global scale, according to a new Deloitte report. The company's annual TMT predictions this year, released yesterday, make the observation that over 90% of the most used online applications on fixed broadband networks in developed markets will have the same vendor-recommended bitrate as in 2023.
